An Important Message

Sean Kelly, Head of Kendal Corporation

Sean Kelly, Head of Kendal Corporation

Kendal on Hudson is a life-care institution intimately connected, along with 12 other Kendals, to the Kendal Corporation. Those of us who reside at KoH frequently look to Kendal Corp for guidance, especially from its President and CEO Sean Kelly.

We recently received a letter from Sean which we believe merits wider distribution and, therefore, we’re including it in toto for all to read:

Friends:

Right now, every single one of us is experiencing some level of anger, sadness and even fear as a complex climate of divisiveness seems to touch all aspects of our world.

We understand why there are protests. Kendal has always been, and continues to be a place for those who speak out and act for social justice, in peace and in strength. Kendal and its Quaker forebearers have stood, spoken loudly and taken heroic action against discrimination — but the impact of those testimonies has not been lasting. Today a bright light shines upon that painful reality — brought into sharp focus by the recent abhorrent and unconscionable deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and now George Floyd. This has to end, and we must raise our voices and act on our convictions.

Now, more than ever, we will speak out and hold up the Values that unite us across the Kendal System. Kendal has no tolerance for hate or any form of discrimination. Living and working together in true community is critical to how we serve and thrive.

Kendal encourages and welcomes all people without regard to race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, or any other characteristic, to live in our communities and to serve on our teams and boards. We believe deeply that equality is a human right, and Kendal communities have been among the first in the country to seek diversity in individuals who want to live and work at Kendal.

Kendal values quality of life and fostering a sense of community. In order to live out these values, we believe that each person is to be cherished, honored and treated accordingly in an atmosphere of mutual respect and caring.

Kendal values integrity and seeks to live in harmony with the truth. We are compelled to call out these terrible acts of social injustice for what they are and to help eliminate all forms of racism and violence so that we all may find a better place together.

While these words have a shared meaning for us all — and they can be inspiring and indeed help us endure — we don’t all share the same experiences. As a diverse community, residents, as well as team members, have had different life experiences. Many people of color have had to work harder, endure racism, and overcome negative experiences simply as a result of their skin color. Speaking to this condition is a shared responsibility.

While each of our paths to this place today have been different, we now stand together to call out for a better way. For those who continually experience injustice, inequality and discrimination, in direct contradiction of our shared Kendal Values, I say we stand with you, we resist with you.

We say thank you to our team members — you heroes who get up each day and continue to serve — bringing your skills, compassion, dedication and courage to the work you do. YOU inspire us to stay at it and never give up in our determination to create change, to create something better, built on the bedrock of Kendal’s values and the Quaker spirit they are drawn from. Enduring isn’t enough. We MUST make change, and we will, together.

In the coming days and weeks, we will find the means to come together and know one another at a deeper level across Kendal. We will hear each other’s stories; we will hold each other up. We will also find partners outside of Kendal who hope for and are inspired to work with us toward common goals, goals that not only speak of change but make it happen.

This week, on Thursday, June 4, at 9 a.m. PT, 11 a.m. CT and Noon ET, wherever we are, we will stand together in solidarity and in silence for 5 minutes of silence, united in acknowledging what wrongs have been committed and recognizing where we stand on the long path forward to peace and justice.

Thank you,

Sean Kelly President and CEO “

On June 4, as per the request of its CEO Pamela Klapproth, the residents of Kendal on Hudson spent five minutes at noon standing on their outside terraces in silent reflection and solidarity. Staff stood around the perimeter of Kendal and on the terrace.

A Kendal Movie Special

Hepburn-Grant (1).jpg

We’ve got something special for you, especially if you love Audrey Hepburn. Don’t we all?

Channel 1970 Movie News

A cinematic treat is in store for us all of us. On Friday, June 12, at 3 pm, Channel 1970 will show an interview with Audrey Hepburn which was filmed by our own Suzette Winter and her husband as part of a collection called Legends of the Silver Screen.

Then at 8 pm, on that same date, Channel 1970 will show the Audrey Hepburn film They All Laughed.

If you want to know a little about the story of this 1981 film, keep reading…

The employees of New York City's Odyssey Detective Agency can't seem to prevent themselves from getting over-involved in their clients' lives. When aging gumshoe John Russo (Ben Gazzara) is assigned to trail an Italian millionaire's wife Angela (Audrey Hepburn), he inevitably falls for her continental charm. His partner, Charles (John Ritter), is similarly unable to keep his hands off the woman he's trailing -- a winsome cheating spouse named Dolores (Dorothy Stratten).

It sounds great.

If you watch it, let Annette Leyden know what you think!

Important Notice on COVID-19 Tracing

COVID 19 Tracing.jpg

Town Supervisor Fulgenzi sent the following message to residents of Mount Pleasant:

As we battle coronavirus together, tracing exposure to COVID is important to halt its spread. The NYS Contact Tracing Program uses trained specialists to reach out to confirmed positive COVID-19 individuals to determine their contacts.

If you have been identified as a contact, you will receive a call from NYS Contact Tracing (518-387-9993). Because the disease can be transmitted by those without symptoms, notifying people about possible exposure is critical.

If you get this call, please respond as requested. Information will be kept confidential and private. He also warns us that scammers make take advantage, so be on the alert for scams that do not come from “NYS Contact Tracing.”

Fill in the ovals completely next to your choice. Any mistake invalidates the ballot. You must call 914-995-5700 (Board of Elections) for a new ballot.

This was noted in the AARP Bulletin. Sign up to receive election reminders, update your registration, or apply for an absentee ballot. They will also alert you to when an election is coming up. Go to votingtool.aarp.org.

AROMATIC and DELICIOUS HERBS COMING TO KENDAL

herbs.png

Members of the Horticulture Committee and helpers are in the process of planning the Residents’ Herb Garden. Here is a message from our horticulturists:

Please enjoy watching us work and then watching these small plants grow and thrive.

The garden, marked by a large dragonfly, will have the usual favorites such as mint and basil. There will also be parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, along with lavender, oregano, and some surprises.

For the time being, enjoy anticipating the pleasure these wonderful plants will bring.

Please do not pinch or snip or pick any of the plants at this early stage. They need a chance to grow! We will be sure to let you know when they are ready to snip, which is usually around July 1.

JULY THEATER COURSE VIA ZOOM

Kate Farrington.png

In this time of suspension and lockdown, Kendal residents are not sitting idly in their apartments glued to the TV. There are quite a few activities that are available through Zoom. For instance:

JULY THEATER COURSE

Dramaturg and theater professor Kate Farrington returns in July for her fourth Kendal course.

This time her theme is “England’s Comic Playwrights Usher in the 20th Century.” The course will be offered via Zoom from 2:00 to 3:15 on Tuesdays, July 7, 14, 21, and 28. Look for the information sheet distributed to residents’ apartments. Participants will need access to a computer or other digital device.

If interested in participating, please contact Fran Kelly by June 15, preferably via email. If that doesn’t work, contact her via that ancient device called a telephone.
