Coming up on the Saturday Opera is Ruggero Leoncavallo’s verismo opera Pagliacci. It will be shown on Saturday, July 30.
The principal roles are sung by Placido Domingo, Teresa Stratas and Sherrill Milnes. This is a production by Franco Zeffirelli for the Metropolitan Opera, conducted by James Levine, in a 1978 performance.
You will be able to see and hear it in the Gathering Room at 1:00 pm.

There will be a KoH Capital Budget Presentation on Thursday, July 28, at 11:15 am via ZOOM.
Jean Eccleston and Bob Michael, together with the Resident Budget Advisory Committee, will explain the Capital Budget process. This presentation will be recorded for any resident who is unable to attend, and will be posted on CATIE.

A trip to Neuberger Museum of Art and Pepsico Sculpture Gardens is scheduled for Saturday, August 20.
We will visit the sculpture gardens first, have lunch at a local restaurant, and then visit the museum with a docent tour.
The Pepsico Sculpture Gardens, across from SUNY Purchase, has 45 pieces of outdoor sculpture in beautiful settings. The collection includes works by major 20th-century artists including Rodin, Moore, Calder, and Pomodoro.
The Neuberger Museum, on the SUNY Purchase campus, has collections of modern, contemporary, and African art. The current special exhibitions are:
Tomashi Jackson - “SLOW JAMZ”; and Milton Avery - “Watercolors.”
“SLOW JAMZ” is a dynamic multimedia experience with floor-to-ceiling projections and soundtracks; “Light, color, sound, and texture are vehicles to explore issues of injustice…”
“Watercolors” by Milton Avery illustrate his vibrant, emotive color palettes and balance between realism and abstraction. The artist is known for his influence on other artists with his focus on color relationships.
This looks like a full day of great things to see.

After a prolonged pandemic pause, the Health and Wellness Committee is once again delighted to invite you to a Coffee Klatch hosted by Chris Appel, KoH’s Director of Nursing. It will take place on Wednesday, July 27 at 10:00 am on Zoom.
In a follow-up to Dr. K’s recent talk on end-of-life issues, Chris and Lisa Wacht, Health Services Administrator, along with Stacy Conway, Social Worker, and Alisa Pontrelli, Adirondack Case Manager, will focus on how palliative care and comfort care and hospice function at the different levels of living in the Health Center.
Time permitting, this will be followed by an informal discussion of your questions and concerns about health care at Kendal.

“Norman Rockwell’s Westchester” is the subject of Kendal’s next lecture presentation.
The images of America’s most popular illustrator Norman Rockwell have been reproduced more than those of any other artist. His perfectly detailed portrayals of Americana illustrated 322 Saturday Evening Post covers, 49 Boy Scout calendars, and dozens of other periodicals, children's books, and advertisements.
He was the master illustrator of life in America. For the first 25 years of his formidable career, Norman Rockwell’s America was New Rochelle, where he lived and worked. In an illustrated slideshow, Westchester County Historical Society Co-Director and New Rochelle’s City Historian Barbara Davis will discuss the great illustrator’s early years in Mamaroneck and the two and half decades he spent in New Rochelle. The presentation will take place on Monday, July 25 at 7:30 pm in the Gathering Room.
Always willing to try something new is one of the great things about Kendal’s culture.
The most recent is the playing of Bocce Ball in Kendal’s backyard.
What is Bocce? Wikipedia tells us, “Bocce, sometimes anglicized as bocce ball, bocci or boccie, is a ball sport belonging to the boules family. Developed into its present form in Italy, it is closely related to British bowls and French pétanque, with a common ancestry from ancient games, played in the Roman Empire.”
Bocce is played at Kendal on Wednesdays at 1:30 pm. Todd Healy of Kendal’s Fitness Center supervises the activity. Bocce is open to all Kendal residents. It’s great low-level impact exercise and lots of social fun.

The Metropolitan Opera Live HD 2022-23 Season will be upon us shortly.
The sign-up sheets for all opera trips are now in the Trips Book at the Main Desk.
Space is still available for Falstaff, but do add your name to the wait list for the other operas. Many a resident has gotten on a trip despite a long wait list because dropouts can be high, even up to the last minute.
The message is “Sign Up”. You can never tell whether or not there will be a dropout. If there is one, you might get lucky.
While we’re on the subject of trips, we are told that there is no waiting list for the Wednesday, August 10 trip to visit the Horace Greeley House in Chappaqua.
It is time to start thinking about the 2023-2024 Kendal Residents Council Election.
Janet Schloat, our Elections Committee Chair, notes “Now is the time to consider running for one of the seven open seats on the 2023-2024 Residents Council. It’s up to each of us to keep our community vibrant, current, functioning, and relevant.”
Look for your copy of the Election Committee letter, to be placed in your cubby on July 18, and submit your Intent to Run Form by August 12.

Kendal’s Saturday Opera program continues.
On Saturday, July 23, the Opera Committee offers lighter fare in the form of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance.
Pirates is based on the smash Broadway musical version with Kevin Kline, Angela Lansbury, Linda Ronstadt, George Rose, and Rex Smith. Graciela Daniele is the choreographer in this Joseph Papp production directed by Wilford Leach.
Pirates will be shown in the Gathering Room at 1:00 pm.
On July 18, Kendal will host a lecture by Howard Permut and Kevin Carter entitled “This is Teatown”.
Teatown is a nonprofit nature preserve and environmental education center in the Lower Hudson Valley, with 15 miles of hiking trails, a two-acre island refuge for over 230 species of native wildflowers, year-round programming, wildlife exhibits, and natural science day camps in the summer and school breaks.
Its goal is to instill a love of the environment, positive attitudes toward conservation and environmental protection, and a sense of personal and civic responsibility.
Residents are invited to join in on Monday evening, July 18, as Board Chair Howard Permut and Executive Director Kevin Carter educate us about how Teatown carries out its mission to inspire the broader community to lifelong environmental stewardship.
The program will be in the Gathering Room starting at 7:30 pm.
