Trip, Trip, Trip

There are now three "Do Your Own Thing" trips on the calendar. They are scheduled for Nov. 29, Dec. 13, and  Jan 3.  These trips leave residents at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and pick them up there later that same day.

To enhance the experience of viewing the Michelangelo Exhibit at the Met, Kendal's own art expert Ann Holloway will give talks on what to expect. The talks are scheduled for Nov. 27, Dec. 11, and Jan.2 at 4:00 pm in the Residents Association Office.

IMPORTANT! The trips and Ann's talks must be signed up for in the Trips Book. The number of each is limited so speed in signing up is of the essence.

Check the Nov. 20 Spotlight for more details.

At that time Deborah Lee Trupin, a noted textile conservator, will give a presentation on "A Tale of Two Flags: The Conservation of Two War of 1812 Flags."

The conservation and restoration of flags and banners is the process by which conservators work to preserve and restore flags and banners from future deterioration and damage. As a part of conservation of textiles, flag and banner conservation require the care of a skilled and well trained textile conservator, specifically trained in historical materials.

Mark your calendar: Dec. 8, 2:00 pm in the Gathering Room.

Sean Kelly

During the last week Kendal on Hudson was very pleased to have a visit from Sean Kelly, Kendal Corporation's President and CEO. For those who don't know him, Sean succeeded John Diffey as Kendal’s President and CEO on Jan. 1, 2016, after serving as Kendal’s Director for New Business Development from 2008 through 2015. While at Kendal, Sean has been responsible for leading and managing organizational efforts aimed at fostering new opportunities for growth, while supporting planning and development initiatives for existing Kendal communities. Sean is well-known in the aging services field and has been a frequent speaker around the country and beyond, on numerous topics.

Kendal is a leading, not-for-profit provider of communities, programs, and services that advocates for and empowers older adults to achieve their full potential. With a history of groundbreaking leadership and proven expertise in the field, Kendal lives its values to continue to transform the experience of aging.

In 1970, a committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) gave a grant of $300,000 to a local group for the study of the possible development of a retirement community in Chester County, Pa. In 1971, ground was broken for Kendal at Longwood, the first Kendal community.

In the 45+ years since then, in response to the needs of other local groups, Kendal has developed and opened three more communities in Chester County, Pa., as well as communities in Hanover, N.H., Oberlin and Granville, Ohio, Ithaca and Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., and Lexington, Va.

With the affiliation of Barclay Friends in West Chester, Pa., Lathrop Communities in western Massachusetts, The Admiral at the Lake on Chicago’s lakefront, Collington in metro Washington, D.C., and Chandler Hall in Bucks County, Pa., Kendal continues to respond to the call to broaden its service.

Sean talked to the residents about Kendal's future and the difficulties the current tax proposals now in the Congress present for Kendal and all other retirement communities. He noted that Kendal is part of a national movement to influence national lawmakers on behalf of America's aging population.

Sean's remarks have been recorded and will be available shortly on KOH's internal TV station, Channel 1970.

Movies

Some retirement communities show a movie once a week (or once in a while); not Kendal on Hudson!

Through the efforts of the Movie Committee, and especially its chair and leading light Leonore Meyer, we have a top-grade movie almost every night!  When there is not a concert or a lecture, you can pretty much count on a big-screen movie in the Gathering Room.

This week Leonore has really outdone herself.  Among others, she is making available Casablanca, Rhapsody in Blue, and the Paul Newman classic, The Hustler.

If you miss any of them, they are usually re-played on Channel 1970 the following night which is available on the TVs in every Kendal apartment. Details are available in Spotlight.

Staff Appreciation Fund

Staff Appreciation3.jpg

Thanks to all who have already made their gifts to the Staff Appreciation Fund we are more than halfway to our goal for 2017.

However, for those who haven't gotten around to it as yet, right now is a good time to take checkbook and pen in hand, think about all the wonderful service (tip-free) our staff provides, and let your generosity flow.

We are suggesting gifts of $175 per person ($350 per couple). Larger gifts are greatly appreciated.

The collection box is at the front desk in the Powell Building.

Our thanks in advance.

Marilyn Bottjer & Gene DuBow, Co-Chairs.
