Creating

“I never realized the third stage of life could be such a Renaissance time.” (KoH resident)

Looking around Kendal on Hudson, one sees residents creating art, crafts, tasteful decorating throughout the four buildings, music, photography, and writing.

There are opportunities to be involved with arts and crafts with programs through the Art Committee and Fiber Arts, with decorating through the Common Areas Furniture and Art (CAFA) Committee, with music through the Bell Ringers, Kendal Chorale, and Music on the Balcony, and with writing through the Kendal View and Spotlight Committees and the new Writings page.

ART

There are many active artists, an art studio, art classes, exhibits of work by residents and staff, all artfully coordinated by the resident Art Committee.

The photos below are from a drawing workshop class with Pam Dietrich.

FIBER ARTS

Fiber Arts uses the craft room for weaving, knitting, needlepoint, crochet, and rug hooking.

MUSIC

Bell Ringers practice regularly and have played at concerts and memorial services.

The Kendal Chorus practices weekly, gives two concerts a year, and organizes Sing-alongs for the entire community.  Click on the photo below for a slide show of one of their concerts.

Music on the Balcony (known as MOB) sight-reads new music every Thursday evening from 7-9.  There are four violins, two violas, two cellos, and one recorder. Sometimes there is a harpsichord.  Four are Kendal residents and five are from surrounding villages.

WRITING

Kendal on Hudson is home to a number of writers.  The library has an entire bookcase filled with books authored by Kendal residents. Others publish in Kendal View, a literary journal with 16-pages of text, four pages of full-color photographs, and eight pages of ads. Some write for the Residents Website or for Spotlight, a weekly newsletter. Short writings (poems, non-fiction, or fiction) appear on the Writings page of the Residents Website.

Spotlight and Writings

Every week a team of residents on the Spotlight Committee edit and produce the weekly newsletter, which is also accessible from this website at Spotlight.
