GIFT BAGS FOR THANKSGIVING!

Last year at this time, travel plans were limited. The Tuesday Morning Club knows that at home or away, a seasonally decorated bottle on the dinner table always makes a cheerful sight. 

We will be selling our lovely gift bags on Friday November 19, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. 

Shirley and Sally have been busy with wonderful fabric and ribbons and you will see the lovely results on Friday.

The bags sell for $5 and IOUs are fine.  We ask that you be careful about keeping a social distance when admiring and purchasing our handiwork. 

All the proceeds go to the Tuesday Morning Club.

Clay Hand- Building Workshop at Kendal

A hand-building workshop in clay, led by Vicky Youngman of the Pace University Art Department, will take place at Kendal on Wednesdays,  December 1 and 8, from 10 am to 12 noon in the Art Room.

During the first workshop, participants will make a three-part vase with a decorative element, pattern or texture impressed in the clay. There will be a wide array of options for you to choose from.

Similarly, there will be many vase templates that participants can use, or they can create their own. 

The vases will be fired in a kiln and brought back so that participants can paint (glaze) them during the second workshop. They will be fired one more time and brought back to Kendal.   

Enjoy your own creation!

Fee: $25 for both sessions. Maximum-12 people

Lecture: “Behind the Bench”

On Monday, November 15, Kendal will hear Judge Louis Stanton speaking on “Behind the Bench”

 Judge Stanton has been a Kendal resident since December 2020.  In his 90s, he drives downtown every weekday to the Federal Courthouse at Foley Square where he is a U.S. District Judge.

Judge Stanton completed his Bachelor’s Degree at Yale and attended the University of Virginia, where he received his LLB/J.D. in 1955. 

Nominated by President Reagan and confirmed by the Senate in 1985, Louis Stanton has been a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York ever since.  He says that for a litigator, this is the best job anyone can have.

Saturday Opera at Kendal

Saturday Opera at Kendal has become a weekly occurrence.

On Saturday, November 13, at 1:00 pm, Jules Massenet’s Manon will be shown in the Gathering Room, with Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon in a 2007 production.

The opera will be performed by the Staatskapelle Berlin conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

New Trip

A New Trip has been arranged by the ever-active Trips Committee.

A visit to the Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, NY will take place on Wednesday, December 1.

It will feature a guided tour of "Arrivals," more than 50 works by artists from the 16th to the 21st centuries. The exhibit focuses on seven "arrival moments": 1492, Columbus; 1620, Mayflower; 1860s, the Middle Passage; 1891-1924, Ellis Island; World War II; 1965; and Today, the southern border.

The artists explore arrival moments and "What does it mean to be an American?" through myths and complexities, storytelling, memories of ancestors, belonging, race, perseverance and the way the U.S. has reacted to changing demographics and societies.

Also, there will be a single Rothko in a room designed for reflection by one individual.

Sign-up, as usual, will be in the Trips Book located in the Activities Alcove.

Concert at Kendal November 14, 3:00 pm

On Sunday, November 14, award-winning violinist Ariel Horowitz returns for her third performance at Kendal.

Joining Ariel in her Kendal debut will be pianist Alexa Stier, a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at the Yale School of Music.

Their program will include works by Taillefaire, Brahms, Mozart, and Prokofiev.

A reception will follow the concert in the Private Dining Room.

Program: Llyn Clague on Coming of Age

On November 8 at 7:30 pm in the Gathering Room, Kendal will be hearing from one of its own, poet Llyn Clague.

Kendal’s resident poet will share poems from his book-length collection Coming of Age, about life at Kendal as he has experienced it since joining us in April 2019.

"Coming of age" is a phrase typically used in reference to early adulthood, but have not we here "come of a (certain) age?"

This will be a great opportunity to enjoy Llyn's poems celebrating our life at KoH.

All are welcome.

Cuatro Puntos Concert

A concert at Kendal is planned for Sunday, November 7, in the Gathering Room

Cuatro Puntos is a multi-faceted, non-profit organization that activates music as a pragmatic and universally accessible stimulus for social change, cultural awareness, and empowerment of the under-served.

We welcome Cuatro Puntos for their sixth Kendal performance:  Aaron Packard and Annie Trepanier, violin; Kevin Bishop and Steve Larson, viola; and Allan Ballinger, cello.

Their program includes works by Samuel Coleridge Taylor, Johannes Brahms, and Kevin Bishop.
