Thanksgiving Notes

***Alida Puzzle Table Thrives

The Alida puzzlers continue to benefit from gift puzzles and wish to thank the generous donors.

***Where to Post a Personal Notice

The large bulletin board in the Activities Alcove between the Residents Lounge and the Gathering Room has space for personal posts, such as lost-and-found, wanted and sales notices.

***THANKSGIVING

Since it is a national holiday, most non-essential activities and services will be suspended for the day. There will be one large, sumptuous meal served at lunchtime.

***The Editors and Staff at the Residents Website wish everyone a joyous and healthy holiday.

Looking Ahead...

Looking ahead? Please do!

On Tuesday, December 7, the Resident Services Department will close at 2:00 pm for a well-deserved Holiday luncheon.

A trip to Trader Joe’s will be offered at 9:30 am that day, but no resident services will be available after 2:00 pm.

Instead, there will be shopping on Wednesday, December 8, to Tarrytown at 9:30 am and to Ossining at 1:00 pm.

Thanks for your understanding.

If you have any questions, please call Ellen Ottstadt.

Lessons of Covid: Lecture

On Monday evening, November 22, 7:30 pm, Kendal will welcome Eileen Egan, Executive Director, Phelps Hospital/Northwell Health for a lecture. It will take place in the Gathering Room.

Will the lessons of COVID make us more prepared, and our health care system more adept for the next global challenge?  Ms. Egan will discuss the aftermath of the COVID pandemic and how it has impacted everything, particularly the delivery of health care.

Before assuming her current position in June 2020, Ms. Egan served as vice president of administration, where she oversaw many departments.  She initially joined Phelps in 1981 as a charge nurse in the Intensive Care/Critical Care and Medical/Surgical Units.  She later spent 13 years in the Emergency Department before leaving to pursue a career in law.

Ms. Egan is the recipient of the Phelps Star Award for outstanding service, commitment and attitude, and was nominated for Nurse of Distinction at Phelps and Emergency Nurse of the Year in Westchester County.  She is a certified emergency nurse (CEN) and certified in pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).

Holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of New Rochelle, Ms. Egan received her Juris Doctorate from Pace University School of Law.

Saturday Opera

The SATURDAY OPERA COMMITTEE announced…

Please join us in the Gathering Room on Saturday, November 20, at 1:00 pm for a documentary, Birgit Nilsson – A League of Her Own.

It includes highlights from her performances, including archived material and interviews with Placido Domingo, Marilyn Horne, Christa Ludwig, Jonas Kaufmann, Nina Stemme, James Levine, and others. English subtitles.
This is a rare opportunity to find out about the life of an opera icon.

December Course

Professor Jean-Marc Oppenheim will offer a course at Kendal via Zoom. The topic will be “Afghanistan: from the Taliban to --the Taliban”

The lectures will take place on Tuesdays, December 7 and 14, from 2 pm to 3 pm, via ZOOM.

Professor Oppenheim will examine the historical, social, and political dynamics of Afghanistan since the mid-19th century. He will assess both the role played by neighboring states and Islamist extremists in the recent and current evolution of Afghanistan, and its anticipated contribution to the political dynamics of central Asia.

The fee is $20 per person. To sign up, contact Fran Kelly.

New Trip Announced

TRIPS COMMITTEE TO FEATURE DECEMBER 9 - NEW YORK CITY - “DO YOUR OWN THING”

The Trips Committee has scheduled a New York City “Do Your Own Thing” on Thursday, December 9, with drop off and pick up at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

For the benefit of new residents this trip is unlike any other Kendal trip in that you can go anywhere you like in Manhattan as long as you are back on the van at the departure time of 2:45 pm; or you could visit the Met Museum for all or part of your stay as many residents do. Have lunch with friends, shop, visit other museums, or walk in Central Park.

This trip is designed for Independent Living residents with initiative and self-sufficiency.

In December the Metropolitan Museum of Art will have ten major exhibitions and 11 smaller ones, in addition to its collection.

Sign-up is in the Trips Book located in the Activities Alcove opposite the Computer Room.

GIFT BAGS FOR THANKSGIVING!

A Message from Sally Costa & Shirley Miller

GIFT BAGS FOR THANKSGIVING!

Last year at this time, travel plans were limited. The Tuesday Morning Club knows that at home or away, a seasonally decorated bottle on the dinner table always makes a cheerful sight.

We will be selling our lovely gift bags on Friday November 19, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Shirley and Sally have been busy with wonderful fabric and ribbons and you will see the lovely results on Friday.

The bags sell for $5 and IOUs are fine.  We ask that you be careful about keeping a social distance when admiring and purchasing our handiwork.

All the proceeds go to the Tuesday Morning Club.

Hope to see you there!
