Gioachino Rossini’s comic opera Le Comte Ory is our choice for May 7.
This is a Metropolitan Opera production by Bartlett Sher, which premiered in 2011 with Juan Diego Flórez, Diana Damrau, and Joyce DiDonato in the principal roles.
Maurizio Benini conducts the Met orchestra.

There will be a KoH Bell Ringers Pre-Lunch Recital on Wednesday, May 4, at 11:30 am in the Gathering Room. Enjoy listening to the Bell Ringers as they play music of Haydn, Mozart, Mussorgsky, and more, adapted for bell choirs.
A lecture on “Challenging Blindness and Winning” will be presented on Monday evening, May 2, in the Gathering Room at 7:30 pm by Clifford B. Aaron, prominent attorney, inspiring lecturer, and son of Sydell Aaron.
Mr. Aaron will discuss his life prior to being diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, how the diagnosis changed his life, and how he has overcome his disability to become a successful attorney.
In his career, he prosecuted the most serious felony cases involving career criminals while working in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, specialized in automotive product liability defense and trials at Herzfeld Rubin, and now heads up the transportation defense litigation group as a Senior Partner at London Fischer LLP.

The new Great Course to start the weekend of May 14 on KoH Channel 970 will be “The Great Trials of World History…And the Lessons They Teach Us”
This course will examine 24 of the greatest trials in history, from Socrates to O. J. Simpson.
We will see how societies have used trials to resolve key issues and decide the fates of evildoers, abusers of power, champions of free speech, and innocent people caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Led by Douglas O. Linder, J.D., Professor of Law, University of Missouri- Kansas City School of Law, the 24 lectures will be broadcast on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons, from 3 pm to 4 pm over Channel 970. Look for the schedule on page 1 of Spotlight next week.

On May 1, at 3 pm, Molsky’s Mountain Drifters will be playing in the Gathering Room at Kendal.
Mountain music is described as traditional vocal and instrumental folk music of the southern Appalachians and Ozarks, usually played on acoustic stringed instruments (fiddle, guitar, banjo, and mandolin).
Bruce Molsky, one of the most revered ambassadors for America’s old-time mountain music, has been a globetrotting performer and educator, a recording artist with an expansive discography including seven solo albums, well over a dozen collaborations, and two Grammy nominations.
Molsky, along with banjoist Tony Trischka and vocalist Paula Bradley, will educate and entertain us in a program filled with the special sound of mountain music.
On Wednesday, May 18, the Trips Committee will be taking a group to Wave Hill, Bronx. It is a jewel of a public garden overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades with flower gardens, an alpine house, a cultural center, and stunning views. The spring exhibition is on water scarcity.

Famed pianist Michael Boriskin will be lecturing at Kendal on Tuesdays, May 10, 17, and 24, 1:30-3:30 pm, in the Gathering Room.
Boriskin returns for a 3-session course: Three Centuries of Musical Revolutionaries. He will explore the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Berlioz, Liszt, Stravinsky, Debussy, Prokofiev, Ravel, and Gershwin, whose music initially was greeted with confusion, misunderstanding, and often scorn and derision.
Sign-up sheets have been distributed. Tuition: $45 for all three sessions; $20 for an individual session.
The Kendal on Hudson Oral History Project and Marketing Video is ready for viewing.
The hour-long program scheduled for April 10 was canceled because of COVID.
We were going to tell you that the video was created as an offshoot of the Archives and Oral History Project for use as a marketing tool for potential residents. We were going to tell you about Sound & Story, the non-profit organization devoted to building community memory, which conducted the oral history interviews and extracted the most heartfelt and enticing bits to create a video worthy of KoH ( www.soundandstory.org ).
The project took the better part of 2021 and now comprises more than 200 gigabytes of text and video, housed at multiple sites to keep it secure. We hoped to convey the value of this material to KoH residents, to scholars studying the evolution of senior living, to local historical societies, and as a rich source for a hoped-for written history of Kendal on Hudson.
