Metropolitan Opera in HD Live 2022-23 Season

The Trips Committee will conduct a sign-up session on Friday, July 8, between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, in the Private Dining Room (PDR) for the Metropolitan Opera’s upcoming HD Live performances.

The list of operas that will have been selected for KoH trips, and details about signing up, will be delivered to residents’ cubbies and posted on CATIE and the residents website (kohresweb.org) on Wednesday, July 6.

Please look for these details, save the date and time for signing up, and come to the PDR on July 8.

After that initial session, sign-up sheets will be available in the Trips Book at the Main Desk.

Jazz on the Terrace

Sunday, July 10, 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

This is the first of four Sunday afternoon concerts by Mark Morganelli and the Jazz Forum All-Stars in July and August. The other dates are July 24, August 7, and August 21.

Performers include Mark Morganelli, trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion; Roni Ben-Hur, guitar; Cameron Brown, bass; and Tony Jefferson, drums and vocals.

 Caution:  While most seating will be under the tent, the Terrace can be hot in the summer; attendees should bring their own water to maintain hydration In case of rain, concerts will be held in the Gathering Room.

P.S. CATIE is predicting partly sunny weather. We’ll see how accurate she will be.

Saturday Opera

Our July 2 screening will be Gaetano Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore in a performance by the Metropolitan Opera from October 2012.

The principal roles are sung by Anna Netrebko (Adina), Matthew Polenzani (Nemorino), Maruisz Kwiecien (Belcore), Ambrogio Maestri (Dr.Dulcamara), and Ann-Carolyn Bird (Giannetta).

The production and direction is by Barlett Sher, and Maurizio Benini conducts the Met orchestra and chorus.

Please join the opera-lovers in the Gathering Room at 1:00 p.m.

NEW TRIP

The Trips Committee next excursion will be to The Dreyfus Foundation, in Mt. Kisco on Wednesday July 27.

The collection in this museum comprises the works of self-taught and contemporary artists, and pieces from the Louis-Dreyfus Family Collection.

The mission of The Dreyfus Foundation, established in 2014, is to educate the public about art and to feature self-taught and emerging artists. It also supports the Harlem Children’s Zone that aims to end social injustice and improve lives of the disenfranchised.

Special exhibitions this summer: “Paintings by Observation” and “Animals with Attitude”. A docent tour is included. For more information, click here.

KoH Oral History Project and Marketing Video

The July Residents Association Quarterly Meeting has been moved from Monday, July 25 at 7:30 pm to Monday July 11 in the Gathering Room, immediately following the regular Residents Council meeting at 2:00 pm.

Be sure to attend the Quarterly Meeting because the agenda will include the Oral History Project report and a showing of the 10-minute marketing video in which many residents participated.

July 4th on the Terrace

The 4th of July Show on the Terrace should be great!

Muriel Fox, chair of our July 4 event, says a lively program beginning at 5:30 pm on the terrace will feature songs by the Kendal Singers, readings of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, and a debate on “What Should Be the Next Amendment to the U.S. Constitution?”

Bob Kutscher will head a contingent of ushers to help us find seats under the tent.

Then, Enjoy the Fireworks. Rita Benzer will lead KoH residents up the hill to Rockwood Hall at 8:30 pm on July 4 to view spectacular fireworks along the Hudson River. Starting point will be the park entrance opposite Alida.

Those who are sturdy enough to climb to the hilltop should bring a flashlight and something lightweight for seating.

Others can watch from a variety of locations in our building; posters listing these locations will appear on easels near our elevators. Fireworks begin at 9pm.

Lecture: Telescopes

“Telescopes: The art of seeing what is invisible to others -- from Galileo to Webb” will be the featured subject at the Monday evening, June 27, lecture (7:30 pm) in the Gathering Room.

In this talk on the history of telescopes, we’ll start with the simple spyglass of Galileo and end with our newest space instrument: The James Webb Telescope. 

 Along the way, we’ll explore how scientists can learn more about objects in space by not just “seeing” them but by observing them at various energy levels, such as microwave, radio, and x-ray emissions.

Dr. Matthew Ganis, a member of IBM’s Academy of Technology, is an IBM Senior Technical Staff member whose current areas of interest include social media analytics, the Internet of Things, and Agile software methodologies.  

Dr. Ganis is also an adjunct professor of computer science at Pace University in Pleasantville, where he teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Contemporary Issues Discussion Group: "Alone in a Crowd" June 23

Kendal’s weekly (Thursday mornings at 10:00 am ) Zoom discussion program will feature the problem of feeling alone in a group. It is a particular problem for new residents who are entering a communal living situation for the first time.

The ”Alone in a Crowd” program will call upon the experiences of the participants which should be varied and interesting. It will take place on Zoom.
