The Social Events Committee

The Social Events Committee assists the Residents Council (RC) with various social activities in addition to our two major annual special events, the New Year’s Eve party and the Fourth of July celebration.   The two major events have been well attended and well received by the KOH community.

The committee does not hold meetings; it relies on collaboration among residents for specific events and projects.  The committee is chaired by Muriel Fox.  Especially active members are Ariel Verdesi, Lois Seulowitz, Sally Costa and Joe Costa.

The New Year’s Eve show for 2014 introduced a glittering “Times Square”-type globe created by Esther Steinmetz, which will be used in all future KOH New Year celebrations.  The audience counted down to a rousing shout of “Happy New Year.”  Ariel Verdesi led the Kendal Singers, accompanied by Lila D’Adolf; and Lois Seulowitz led the Kendal Players.  Gemma Maver was mistress of ceremonies.

Sally and Joe Costa organized refreshments in the Bistro lounge area, assisted by Bill and Florence Seligman and Gus Tahmin.  The Decorations Committee was headed by Muriel Ressler and Marna Sobelson.  After the show more than 30 residents joined together in the Formal Dining Room for a singalong of oldtime songs.

The first big event to take place in KOH’s new Gathering Room was the Fourth of July celebration.  Jim Wood served as m.c., and the Kendal Singers headed by Ariel Verdesi led the audience in rousing patriotic songs.  The Kendal Players headed by Lois Seulowitz read the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.

After the show, residents watched local fireworks from a variety of viewing spots within the buildings and at the crest of Rockwood Park.

The committee has assisted the RC with events such as the October, 2014 gathering for incoming and outgoing RC members.

The committee looks forward to helping residents enjoy twice-weekly “Happy Hours” and other festivities during 2016.
