1619: A Course on Slavery

Ten writers wrote essays in African American history that comprise the whole of the August 18 issue of New York Times Magazine. The contributors see American history beginning in 1619 rather than, say 1776, with the arrival in Virginia of African slaves. Their descendants’ story, magnificent, cruel, and rich, is the inescapable American history of 2019. It is the basis for a Kendal in-house course.

The participants will read with a critical eye. The magazine, to be supplied, will be the course’s text. It will be led by Kendal’s own Bill McFeely on four Fridays: September 13, 20, 27 and October 4 at 11:15 am in the Residents Association Office.

Limited to 15 people. Sign up starting 9:00 am on September 4.
