An October Course was recently announced by the Education Committee. The course is entitled “Athenian Drama and the Sense of Justice” with Professor Maude Meisel.

It will be held Tuesdays, October 5, 12, 19, 26 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the Gathering Room.

For Athenians, moral ambiguities grew as the Peloponnesian War dragged on, and Athenian dramatists reflect creatively on their times both as powerful public entertainers and as individual provocative voices.

In drawing on myth to explore the most fundamental questions of human life and society, they continue to provoke; current crises in the U.S. make it especially timely to return to those questions.

The plays to be discussed are: Aeschylus -The
Eumenides
;  Sophocles - Oedipus at Colonus;  Euripides - Iphigenia at Aulis;  Aristophanes - Lysistrata.

A sign-up sheet will be distributed in September.

Professor Meisel holds a Ph.D from Columbia’s Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures. She has taught Russian Language, Literature, and Culture, as well as Classics and Humanities, at Columbia, Middlebury, SUNY Stony Brook, and UC Riverside.
