NEW TRIP - BRONX ZOO

A new trip, this one to the Bronx Zoo, has been added to the Trip Committee's list of exciting safaris.

On Monday, Sept. 26, a guided tour led by docent Diona Koerner who recently gave a presentation on Madagascar in the Gathering Room will take place at the Bronx Zoo. Not surprisingly, the focus will be on the animals found on the island nation.

The trip will be scheduled so large amounts of walking can be avoided.

HISTORICAL TOUR IN POSTCARDS

How about a little history?

Patrick Rafferty, the Librarian at the Westchester County Historical Society is coming to Kendal to give us an Historical Tour of Westchester County through - yes - postcards!
All kinds of institutions from the 17th Century to the present will be shown and talked about.

The lecture takes place on Monday, August 29 at 7:30 PM in the Gathering Room
Depending on your age, you may find yourself standing next to an old church or courthouse. (Only kidding!)

This should be an interesting event. Come on out!

THURSDAY EVENING BAROQUE

Almost every Thursday evening at 7:00 PM a small group of talented musicians gather on the 2nd floor landing (overlooking the Mary Powell front desk) to give two hours to playing baroque trios, quartets and quintets.

The three regular Kendal regulars are Bert Pepper (violin), Katherine Sinclair (Recorder), and Dot Bone (Cello) and are joined by a couple of outsiders. None of the group are professional musicians. It is obvious they enjoy playing both for pleasure and the love of the music. The listening audiences are sparse but that does not deter the group from going all-out. The enthusiasm is obvious.

I’m sure the group would welcome having other Kendal musicians join in. Interested? Speak to one of the regulars.

Listeners are also welcome.

RESIDENTS WEBSITE REVEALED

Have you wondered how the Residents Website gets put together every week with a copy of the Spotlight, the menus, the weekly events and the news?

As you might imagine, it takes a considerable amount of time, work and cooperation. There is a Website Committee headed by Caroline Persell who is also the Webmaster. The Webmaster oversees all the activity and postings and has the final say on what “goes up” on the site and what does not.  She posts the confidential reference material (e.g., Resident names and phone numbers) in the Residents Only section.  Caroline also puts links to articles, podcasts and videos of general interest on her “Did You See?” blog.

Most of the weekly material is worked on and posted by the Three Website Musketeers, aka Content Editors (see above).

Peter Bermas scans and posts Spotlight, the menus, monthly trip schedules, etc. -- all the stuff people rely on for daily life at Kendal.

Bill Seligman is responsible for entering each item in the Calendar of Events, another key aid for people, especially when they learn how to automatically download a Kendal event to their smartphone calendar.

Gene DuBow writes and posts the NEWS section.  All of them look for and find illustrations to enliven their posts.

It is the hope of all who are connected to the Website that it proves useful and interesting. There is no doubt that as new residents come to Kendal, they will have matured in the computer age and will utilize this mode of communication as something that is second nature to them. The Residents Website will be available to serve them as it now serves current Residents. Hopefully, many will eventually contribute to it as well.

The Website has not as yet even come close to its potential. Those involved in the Website are working on that. If you have any suggestions to make Residents Website better, please let us know. As the 1970’s rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive sang, “You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet”.

The Trips Committee has outdone itself again with a scheduled trip to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery , Old Dutch Burying Ground and possibly the Old Dutch Church itself.

The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is the final resting place for such notables as Andrew Carnegie, Samuel Gompers, Brooke Astor and William Rockefeller. The grave stones of Revolutionary War soldiers make the place historic and interesting.
