inspired by Dr. Seuss

October 15, 2019 – April 17, 2020

The curators ask for submission of artwork, made by residents and staff. Paintings, photographs, collages, assemblages, wearable art, fiber arts and whatever can hang on the wall or fit in the display case. Please bring your work to the Art Room on Saturday, September 21, between 1 pm and 4 pm or Sunday, September 22, between 10 am and 12 noon. Maximum: three submissions. The work will be curated over that weekend, and we will let you know if your work has been chosen.

The work is to be picked up Monday, September 23, between 10 am and 12 noon.

If you are unable to bring your work to the Art Room, give us a call, and we will arrange for the work to be either picked up or curated in your apartment. Please remember to put your name, the title, medium (oil, collage, etc.), your phone number, and apartment number on the back of the work submitted. The work does not have to be framed at this time. Many thanks!

We look forward to seeing your work and showing others the many talents present at Kendal. It should be an interesting show.

Herman Melville Live

Stephen Collins.png

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Herman Melville's birth and the 100th anniversary of his revival.  As Jill Lepore writes in the July 29 issue of The New Yorker, "Born in 1819, he (Melville) died in 1891, forgotten, only to be rediscovered around the centennial of his birth in 1919. Since then, his fame has known no bounds, his reputation no rest, his life no privacy."

On Monday evening, September 9, actor Stephen Collins will present Sailing Towards My Father a one-man play, concentrating on his evolution as a writer and his complex relations with God, his parents and siblings, wife and children, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The program is 65 minutes, with Q and A to follow.

Stephen Collins grew up in Cambridge, MA and received a BA in Literature from U Mass Boston. After 20-plus years in a sales career, he is back doing what he truly loves— performing and teaching. Recently he has been teaching seminars on Whitman, Hardy, Shakespeare, Frost, and Contemporary Poetry at various locations throughout the country.

We won’t be able to produce Herman Melville live for you, but Stephen Collins is about as close as anyone can come.

Don’t miss it!

Important Transportation Request

van trip2.jpg

The Transportation Advisory Committee wants residents to place their transportation needs in the books as early as possible. The drivers’ schedules are made up by the afternoon of the day before, and it is very difficult for them to accommodate requests that come in at the last minute.

In addition, if a medical appointment is scheduled too late in the afternoon, they may not be able to guarantee a pickup.

Our drivers do an excellent job in meeting our transportation needs. Please help them with your cooperation.

1619: A Course on Slavery

1619.png

Ten writers wrote essays in African American history that comprise the whole of the August 18 issue of New York Times Magazine. The contributors see American history beginning in 1619 rather than, say 1776, with the arrival in Virginia of African slaves. Their descendants’ story, magnificent, cruel, and rich, is the inescapable American history of 2019. It is the basis for a Kendal in-house course.

The participants will read with a critical eye. The magazine, to be supplied, will be the course’s text. It will be led by Kendal’s own Bill McFeely on four Fridays: September 13, 20, 27 and October 4 at 11:15 am in the Residents Association Office.

Limited to 15 people. Sign up starting 9:00 am on September 4.

New Trip Announced

Walkway over the Hudson.png

The ever-active Trips Committee recently announced a new trip for Wednesday, October 2.

Participants will traverse the Walkway Over the Hudson, Highland to Poughkeepsie and stroll over the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge at 1.28 miles. It is a former railway bridge and now a New York State Park, 212 feet above the river with 360°panoramic views;

Walkers will join the mix of individuals who stroll, cycle, walk, jog, roller blade, walk dogs and push strollers. Kendal participants must be able to walk the entire distance one way since the van picks up residents on the other side. It is wheelchair accessible and there are benches on the bridge.

Th new $3 million Dutchess Welcome Center in Poughkeepsie, which opened June 20, includes amenities like restrooms, outdoor patio with seating, tourist information, bike racks and a dog-friendly water fountain.  Priority will be given to residents who have not already taken this trip but some space may be open for repeat participants.

Sign-up as usual is in the Trips Book located in the Activities Alcove.
