Weekly Discussion Group

The weekly Contemporary Issues Discussion Group meets every Thursday morning at 10 am.

In the past few weeks, the joyfully fractious participants have explored such topics as “Denial”, “Is Democracy Dying?”, “American Nationalism”, and “Is There Any Virtue In Being Virtuous?”

Waiting in the wings to be explored and torn apart are “Political Differences” and “Forgiveness”.

The participants are provided with information on the upcoming weekly topic on the Sunday prior to the discussion date .

All are invited to come and join the fun.

Open Dining Advisory Committee March 16

If you want to have some input regarding the food we get at Kendal, you will certainly want to attend the Monday, March 16 Open Dining Advisory Committee meeting.

The meeting is an Open Meeting to which everyone is invited. It will take place in the Gathering Room at 1:30 pm. If there are questions, get in touch with Margo Berger.

Opera on Saturday

Without taking the train to New York or a car ride to White Plains, Kendal offers its own opera program on Saturday afternoons.

On March 14 at 2 pm, “Opera on Film” will be presented in the Gathering Room.

The opera will be Boris Godunov, Acts 3 & 4 with the following cast:

Boris - Robert Lloyd; Dmitri - Alexei Steblianko; Marina - Olga Borodina; Rangoni - Sergei Leiferkus. Conductor Valery Gergiev will lead the Royal Opera Production filmed at Mariinksy Theatre, St. Petersburg.

Travel time from the Elevator to the Gathering Room is 42 seconds.

KoH Anniversary Celebration May 9

Kendal on Hudson’s outstanding impresario Muriel Fox announced plans for the 15th KoH Anniversary Celebration.

Muriel chairs a planning committee made up of residents and staff, along with Fred Coppola, Director of Dining Services. Other members are Steve Fishler, Jeff O’Donnell, Fran Kelly, Cathleen McGaffigan, and Ellen Ottstadt. (May 9, 2005 was the actual date of KoH’s opening.)

Festivities will take place from 2:30-6:00 pm in a large tent on the Terrace. A jazz band concert, champagne toast, and ample hors d’oeuvres will highlight the occasion.

The previous evening, May 8, will feature a Marketing Department event for potential residents. More details to come in the near future.

Mark May 9 on your calendars. This will be a “must” for all residents.

New Trip Announced

Once again, the effervescent Trips Committee has arranged for an exciting excursion.

On Wednesday, April 15, a group will visit the New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, to see the Orchid Show.

Designer Jeff Leatham’s Kaleidoscope is full of personality, color and texture with every gallery in the conservatory a new color experience. With luck, thousands of daffodils will be in bloom on Daffodil Hill, plus other attractions such as the Rock Garden, tram ride, and gift shop. For lunch there is the choice of Pine Tree Café or Hudson Garden Grill restaurant (reservations suggested for latter).

Alert: More Spam Phone Calls at Kendal!

In the past two weeks a resident received the fake “Grandma, this is your grandson” call; numerous calls from “Brandy, a trip adviser,” who also asked “Can you hear me all right?,” a question from a Spam caller we never want to answer “yes” to; a call from Social Security (they will never call us); offers of free interest rates; and an “I repaired your computer recently” call.

The resident generally tries to hang up without speaking as soon as she recognizes it as a Spam call. They are trying to trap us into doing something we don’t want to do, whether giving information or sending money. The fake grandson calls are often in the morning, when we might still be drowsy, so be wary.

Shakespeare Course in April

Kendal is proud to announce an April Course, “Shakespeare— Faking It.”

It will be led by Professor Yoel Magid and will approach understanding Shakespeare as actor/director/writer based on our own search for identity as expressed in themes of acting, deception, disguises and costumes, eavesdropping, role-playing, directing others, gender confusion, and mistaken identities in comedy, history, tragedy, and romance.

Residents should look for the sign-up sheet in their cubbies.

The dates for the course are Tuesdays April 7, 14, 21, and 28, 1:30 to 3:30 pm.

Preventing Falls: A Clinic

A matter that is frequently on the minds of Kendal residents is how they can protect themselves from harmful falls and a trip to the Phelps Emergency Room.

There are ways to prevent falling, and they will be explained by Kendal’s Fitness Coordinator Cathy DiSomma at a Falls Prevention Clinic on Thursday, March 5 in the Fitness Center.

The clinic will run from 10:00-11:30 am and will feature a lecture on “Core Strength and Balance”.

In order to attend, residents must sign up in person with Cathy by Tuesday, March 3.

Afternoon Tea in the Private Dining Room

It won’t be Harrods or Fortnum & Mason, but it will be Kendal at its best.

On Friday, March 27 from 2:30 to 4:00 pm, residents are invited to spend a leisurely, relaxing time at an English Afternoon Tea with friends, good conversation, and wonderful tea sandwiches, scones and desserts to go along with tea.

Space is limited to 32 persons; cost is $12 per person. Sign-up in the Activities Alcove starts on Monday, March 2. Checks should be made payable to the KoH Residents Association, with “Afternoon Tea” in the Memo section.
