Nancy Gibbs Lecture

On Monday, October 26, at 7:00 pm Nancy Gibbs, daughter of our own Janet Gibbs, returns for her third Kendal lecture, this time on Zoom. The topic is “The Perfect Storm that Threatens Democracy.”

Ms. Gibbs is an American essayist, speaker, and presidential historian. She is a former Managing Editor of Time magazine, and an author and commentator on politics and values in the U.S. Her books include The Preacher and the Presidents: Billy Graham in the White House (2007) and The Presidents Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity (2012).

Currently serving as the Lombard Director of the Shorenstein Center at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Gibbs is also the Visiting Edward R. Murrow Professor of Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard.

Residents with email addresses will receive a Webinar invitation in advance of the program, which will start promptly at 7:00 pm on Monday, October 26.

Parkinson's Support Group

Several residents who have Parkinson’s believe that a support group would be helpful for them. There was such a group until a few years ago, and it is hoped that it might be resurrected or a new one formed.

If you have Parkinson’s, are a partner of or provide support to someone with Parkinson’s, and are interested in exploring the creation of such a group, please contact Julie Moran in the Resident Care Center.

Used Clothes and Household Items Collection

Collection of used clothing and household items is resuming. Arrangements are underway to take your used women’s clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, textiles, and household items, all in good condition, to Goodwill Industries in Elmsford.

Goodwill appears to be the only large center with personnel standing by to accept donations.

Jeff O’Donnell reported that Midnight Run in Dobbs Ferry is also open to receive men’s clothing, furnishings and shoes, and he is volunteering again to deliver your donations to this store.

The target date for delivery is Wednesday, November 4. In the meantime, please look through your closets, kitchens and storage areas for items in good condition and suitable for resale.

Note that your donations must be packed and delivered to a location to be determined on Tuesday, November 3. A reminder will appear in the Spotlight issue of Monday, October 26, and you will find a flyer with more details in your cubbies shortly.

Your donations in kind are particularly important at a time when many families and individuals have little or no income.

Courses and Lectures

Kendal has a full program of courses and lectures to keep the residents busy with intellectual pursuits.

There will be a November Course given by Professor Marjorie Miller on “China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Future.” It will take place on Tuesdays, November 3, 10, 17, 24 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm.  To enroll, contact Fran Kelly.

The next session of the Great Decisions Discussion Group will be held via Zoom on October 19. The topic will be “China and Inroads into Latin America,” led by Ed Hanin. The program will begin with  a viewing of a DVD on the topic on Channel 1970 at 10:00 am, followed by a discussion on Zoom at 10:30. Questions? Contact John Sorice.

Halloween Parade

On Halloween eve, Kendal will have its own parade, and residents are requested to participate.

Please join the Halloween Parade on Friday, October 30, at 2:30 pm in the cul-de-sac.

You might see some scary folks. Don’t miss it!

Alzheimer's Walk

Once again, Kendal on Hudson will enter a team in the annual Alzheimer’s Walk.

This year, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the walk will be on our own campus. Residents are requested to please register online or see Jordan in the Administrative Office.

If you have registered and have not received your shirt, please contact Jordan.

The walk is being held on Wednesday, October 21 from 2:30 pm-3:30 pm. We will meet at the Main Entrance in Mary Powell at 2:15 pm. You may walk around the campus for as long as you wish between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm.

The Alzheimer’s Walk provides some great exercise and also collects funds for an important cause.

KoH TV Channel 1970

While we mention Kendal on Hudson’s internal TV station Channel 1970 on this site occasionally, it merits more kudos for the important role it plays in entertaining and educating our residents.

For instance, “round the clock” the artwork from Kendal’s “Mostly Blue & White” show can be viewed at the times when special programming is not available. One such special program this week at 3:00 pm Monday to Friday is a talk by Tara Sullivan, Deputy Executive Director of the NYS Bridge Authority entitled: “The New York State Bridge Authority - Economic Foundation of the Hudson”.

At 3:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, the next Great Courses presentation features “Museum Masterpieces: The Louvre”.

At 4:30 pm all week, there is a concert by the Avery Ensemble, a string quartet which appeared at Kendal earlier this year.

There are movies each night at 8:00 pm. All listings appear weekly in Spotlight.

Channel 1970 is operated by residents and is overseen by Committee Chair Sheila Darnborough.
