Quaker Connection Videos

Kendal on Hudson came to fruition based on the work begun in 1994 by a group formed at the Purchase Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers. While Kendal has always been open to people from all backgrounds, Quaker values have been a cornerstone of its operation.

Those interested in learning more about Quakers can check out the video series on the KoH resident website.

To get there, type in kohresweb.org on your choice of device (phone, tablet, computer), and click Enter. At the “Resident Life at Kendal…” page, type “Quaker” into the search box, click Enter. Scroll down to find “The Quaker Connection…”, tap the image of Kendal, and choose your video to watch.

To Assist You with Your Digital Needs, the Computer Committee Needs Your Input

To try to aid you, the computer committee needs to know what kinds of digital help you want most and what digital devices you have. 

To learn, we put surveys in your cubby Monday, January 11.  We hope each person will complete a survey and return it, if you haven’t already done so, to Caroline Persell’s cubby by Friday, January 15.  Many thanks.

As of Wednesday January 13, Kendal’s wonderful residents had turned in 74 surveys. Thank you. We’ll post a running total here each day through Friday, January 15. Those who haven’t replied by Friday evening will receive a reminder call.

As of Thursday January 14 at 5:30, there were 88 surveys in. Bravo. Even if you don’t need help, keep them coming!

As of Friday, January 15 at 5:45 pm, 102 surveys were submitted. Thanks to all who have replied. Reminder calls will begin tomorrow. We’ll share the results with you when they are tallied.

Want To Be An Editor?

While here at Kendal we cannot offer residents jobs at the New York Times or the Washington Post, we can put you to work at our own weekly news sheet Spotlight.

Spotlight is looking for a new editor or two. The aim of Spotlight is to provide complete and accurate information in the written form that many residents find helpful.

Each editor is responsible for a week’s issue. This involves taking input from the Spotlight email account and cubby and putting it into a standard format. Each issue is reviewed by the other editors before it is sent for printing.

Good computer skills are important. It would be helpful to have Microsoft Word.

This is a great way for newcomers to learn about all that is going on at Kendal. If you are interested, please contact Mary Lou Wells.

Painting the Sleepy Hollow Wishing Wall Mural

Painting the Mural: The Wishing Wall Tuesday, January 12 at 7:30 pm, via Zoom

The Art Committee invites all to join The Wishing Wall Riverwalk Community Mural Design Team—Artists Erin Carney, Tim Grajek, and Katie Reidy—for an online discussion of the Sleepy Hollow Mural Project from initial concept to final form. 

The Wishing Wall designers organized imagery and text to create a continuous mural composition that stretches the entire 520-foot wall. The discussion will include the artist’s reflections on the process of working with community-sourced texts and images, planning for realization by many hands, scaling the design to the full 65 panels, painting on the textured walls, coordinating with selected artists and volunteers on the project, and leading community group and drop-in painting event collaborations.

Laboratory Services

Julie Moran, Kendal’s Resident Care Center (RCC) Manager, advised that APEX Laboratory, which services Independent residents’ lab needs, is now coming to the RCC early every Tuesday morning.

If residents need to have blood drawn here at Kendal, they must provide a script from their doctor to the RCC, and RCC will schedule an appointment for them on the next Tuesday.

The results will be sent to the prescribing doctor. Please make sure the RCC has your updated insurance information on file.

BRAVO to Jean and Jane and 6 Brave Men

On New Year’s Eve 2020,
In the 10th month of a pandemic,
Discouraged from socializing,
(This time strongly)
I sat alone in my apartment,
A bottle of bubbly at hand
(Provided with my dinner bag.)

At 8:00 on Channel 970-- THE MENS WATER BALLET, New Year’s Eve 2017, showing it from

And I, alone, strongly discouraged, bubbly at
hand,
Watched those men delightfully-not-exactly
synchronized.
Watched Jean and Jane’s blue-sheet-as-pool
rippling.
Sipped my bubbly,
And I did what I needed to do
But never imagined I would do on New Year’s
Eve 2020:
I laughed.
I laughed out loud.

I raised my glass of bubbly to Jean and Jane
and those 6 men:
BRAVO to Jean and Jane who had the brilliant
idea;
BRAVO to 6 brave men willing to be delightfully foolish
For the sake of the Community.

And today I make a proposal:
Let us show THE MEN’S WATER BALLET

Farewell to 2020

While Kendal will not have a Farewell to 2020 holiday party, residents will have an opportunity to say goodbye in a serious and meaningful way.

On January 4 at 2:00 pm Kendal residents Deb Wood and Dorothy Muller invite fellow residents to join them for a contemplative farewell to 2020.

This has been a year like no other, presenting challenges as well as gifts. We will consider together what we are leaving behind and how we contemplate moving forward. The focus will be on three questions:

 What are we glad to leave behind?

 What gifts did 2020 offer that we will cherish?

 Given our experience in 2020, to what do we commit for 2021?

This get-together will take place on Zoom. In order to be part of it, you must register with Jordan DiPaolo.

Education in the Time of the Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected educational systems worldwide, leading to the near-total closure of schools, universities and colleges.

At 7:30 pm Monday, January 4, Schools Superintendent Christopher Borsari will discuss the pandemic’s impact in our own community and will let us know how students and teachers have adjusted to this “new normal” in educational delivery.

Christopher Borsari assumed his position as Superintendent in July 2016. Previously, he was principal of Byram Hills High School in Armonk. Earlier, he served as principal of Sleepy Hollow Middle School. He received his Master’s in Education from Manhattanville College and his Bachelor’s in History from the University of Virginia.

Residents will receive an email invitation with the Zoom link. Please log on around 7:15 pm, so that the program can start promptly at 7:30 pm.
