Dinner for Adirondack Residents in the Bistro

Adirondack (Assisted Living) residents are now dining in the Bistro. This is an important effort to allow them to mix with Independent Living (IL) residents for the benefit of all.

Adirondack residents will be eating in the transitional area during Dinner Service.  IL residents are free to join them or to use any available tables in the transitional area.

Additionally, Adirondack residents may join IL residents in the Formal Dining Room or in other areas of the Bistro.

Trip to Washington's Headquarters

The Trips Committee has announced a new trip for Wednesday, August 18. Participants will visit Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh.

It is a National Historic Landmark and State Historic Site where the general spent most of 1782-83. The first publicly owned and operated historic site in the U.S., the fieldstone Dutch-style farmhouse, also known as Hasbrouck House, is the oldest house in Newburgh.

The site includes a museum of 1,300 items: “Unpacked and Rediscovered: Selections from Washington’s Headquarters Collection”; the Tower of Victory; Minuteman statue; and grounds.

Sign-up takes place as usual in the Activities Alcove opposite the Computer Room.

August 11: Hudson River Cruise.

Beginner’s Drawing Workshop

The Art Committee is sponsoring a “Beginner’s Drawing Workshop” with Emily Denise. She is a Tarrytown artist and cofounder of Main Street Atelier in Tarrytown.

On two Fridays, participants will create still life setups, either from their own objects or from objects available in the Art Room, and work on drawings using fundamental drawing concepts like proportion, perspective, light effect, and compositional design.

During the week, these setups will stay in place, so that participants can continue working on their projects if they choose to.

Materials needed: Paper (white or toned), graphite pencils or charcoal, erasers (kneaded and/or hard), colored pencils optional. Participants can use the Art Room supplies or bring their own.

Date and time: July 30 and August 6 from 2 pm – 4 pm.

Mary Lou Wells

All the members of the Kendal Website Committee were heartbroken to learn of the untimely passing of our co-editor Mary Lou Wells.

Mary Lou was an important cog in the writing and publishing of the Website. She was a warm and vital person who was always willing to take on responsibilities. More than that, her bright sparkling, warm personality and sense of humor will be sorely missed.

We send our tearful condolences to Mary Lou’s husband, John.

Kendal Dialing

One of those things that is difficult for new (and some old) residents is the telephone dialing system at Kendal.

Remember! If you are calling someone outside of Kendal, you must dial 9 first. If you fail to dial 9, you will be calling one of the residents at Kendal because, without the 9, our phone system dials only the first 4 digits you put in. You must also dial 1 (9 plus 1 ) before the area code to get an outside connection.

On the other hand, if you are dialing someone inside Kendal, you only need the four numbers of the extension. No 9 or other prefix is needed.

Transportation Open Forum

There will be a Transportation Open Forum on Thursday, July 15 at 2:00 pm in the Gathering Room

We received more than 100 responses to the Transportation Questionnaire! Thanks to everyone who responded.

Come join us on July 15 for an open discussion on Kendal Transportation.

We’ll present the results of the survey, then open the floor for thoughts and ideas from YOU about how we can best meet the needs of residents as we plan for fall of 2021 and beyond.

The Trips Committee has announced a new trip. This one will be on Wednesday, August 4, to the Bruce Museum, Greenwich.

Two exhibitions featuring the Amazon Rainforest: “Beauty; Destruction, Hope,” a three-part interplay among live animals, scientists, and photographers as they record a sprawling ecosystem on the verge of collapse and the efforts made by Amazon communities to find ways that the rainforest and humanity can prosper in cooperation with the outside world.

Also featured is “Chain Reaction: The Photography of Patrick Nagatani,” a Japanese- American, who created the Nuclear Enchantment series of 40 multilayered, unsettling photographs of the complex issue of bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.

Wednesday, July 21: Stonecrop Gardens, Cold Spring, known for its diversity of plants and flowers.

Wednesday, July 28: Jasper Cropsey Home and Gallery, Hastings-on-Hudson: a charming home and art gallery of the Hudson River School artist (1823-1900).

Wednesday, August 4: Hudson River Cruise on the 130-passenger Pride of the Hudson from Newburgh through the Hudson Highlands.

Signing Up for Trips

After 16 months of no trips during the pandemic, trips usually fill in less than a week.  The van’s capacity is 12 persons. Sign-up sheets are usually put in the Trips Book on Fridays to coincide with the announcement of new trips in Spotlight.  People do cancel, so signing up for the waitlist is effective as long as you keep the day open.

Some Ways for Residents to Communicate with Each Other

There is an obvious need for residents to communicate with each other. In order for there to be a minimum of confusion and misplaced messages, certain rules have been established. They are as follows:

Spotlight Guidelines

In view of some confusion in recent weeks, the editors felt it would be useful to clarify our policies. The purpose of Spotlight is to provide residents with information on the week’s activities, and to serve as a quick reference for dining hours and other available services. It is also used by the Residents Council and various committees to announce programs and request help from residents. It is not a place for personal notices, the exception being items by residents who want to thank the community for their support after a death or hospitalization.

Spotlight Deadline

We would also like to remind everyone that the deadline for submitting items for Spotlight, preferably via email to Spotlight@kohudres.org, is Wednesday at 5 pm. Material arriving after that may not be included.

Residents’ Personal Notices

Please note that there is a Personal Notices space on the bulletin board in the Activities Alcove, near the side entrance to the Gathering Room, convenient for those signing up for trips or using the computer room. We encourage residents who want to buy or sell something or announce an important non-Kendal event to use that space. Any notice posted there should include your name and the date, and be removed after 2 weeks.
