Normalcy

Normalcy.jpg

Slowly and carefully, life at Kendal is returning to normal.

The wearing of masks is no longer an absolute necessity. Residents can eat together in both the Bistro and Dining Room.

Visitors, while they must register at the desk at the main entrance, are welcome. Children and grandchildren (even great-grandchildren) are seen traipsing through the halls on their way to visit resident relatives.

Religious services have started up again. Catholic Mass is held on Sundays at 12:15 pm. Quaker meetings are held in the Riverview Conference Room on Sundays at 11:00 am. Jewish Shabbat services are held on the 2nd Friday of each month at 4:30 pm in the Riverview Conference Room.

The Fitness Center now opens at 8:30 am and is open to more residents at one time than during the pandemic.

Wine and Cheese Receptions have resumed on Wednesdays starting at 5:00 pm in the Residents Lounge.

Some committees have started up with in-person meetings, while some remain on Zoom.

Perhaps, the most important change is the feeling of increased relaxation. It’s wonderful.

Jazz on the Terrace

Mike Morganelli.jpg

Four more “Jazz on the Terrace” concerts are scheduled for July and August.

Mark Morganelli (who plays the flugelhorn) and the Jazz Forum All-Stars will perform on the Terrace from 4 pm to 5 pm on Sundays, July 11 and 25 as well as August 8 and 22.

Seating is available under the tent or around the periphery. In case of rain, the concerts will be held in the Gathering Room.

A Chance to Help

Volunteer.jpg

Residents frequently come to Kendal after long careers of volunteering to help others. There is now an opportunity to help residents in the Memory and Skilled Nursing Units (Sunnyside and Clearwater).

Cynthia Berenguer, the Therapeutic Recreation Director, is looking for volunteers to do courtyard healing garden visits after dinner. Other volunteer opportunities could include sharing travel photos with groups, assisting with Art class with Eileen on Fridays.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Cynthia.

Kendal's Terrace Gardens

Terrace Garden.jpg

Here’s some news about our Terrace Gardens.

Hopefully, you have admired the varied and colorful gardens in the Terrace planters. These planters are assigned to residents who have asked to tend them and who love gardening. Please respect their hard work and do not help yourself to the flowers and vegetables you find there. The Terrace gardeners invite you to enjoy by looking, BUT request that you do not pick EXCEPT from the Herb Garden, which is ready for harvesting.  Mint, lavender, parsley, sage, oregano, thyme (two kinds), chives, garlic tops, and basil are ready for snipping/pruning and indulging, be it merely the scent of lavender or enhancing your meal.

The Residents’ Herb Garden is marked by “Herb Garden” sign, along with the dragonfly. Also, the three-tier small garden at the north end against the Fulton wall is an addition to the Residents’ Herb Garden. It is planted with lavender, basil and parsley.

In harvesting the herbs, please use scissors or garden cutters. If you’d like guidance about the best way to prune, don’t hesitate to contact Maria Harris, Janet Schloat, or Mary Alice Walker.

Note: On Sundays when jazz concerts are held, the programs will start at 2 pm. FIREWORKS RETURN JULY 4!

Although the KoH Fourth of July show will not return to our Gathering Room this year, residents will have ample opportunity to observe fireworks.

Muriel Fox, chair of the Social Events Committee, reports that fireworks will be observable up and down the Hudson River beginning 9 pm on Sunday, July 4. “The most spectacular fireworks are always produced by the towns of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow in tandem. They’re scheduled again this year for 9:15 pm.” Muriel confirms that Sleepy Hollow Country Club will also revive its annual display at 9 pm, and that Nyack will be the first town to blast off.

Questionnaires

TRANSPORTATION QUESTIONNAIRE

Don’t throw it out!

On Wednesday, residents received a questionnaire in their cubby seeking feedback on how, when, and why you use or don’t use Kendal transportation.

As vehicle occupancy returns to normal, we are reassessing current service and considering new options to make the best use of our dedicated drivers and vehicles to meet the needs and desires of residents.

Please fill out the questionnaire and return it to the box at the front desk by end of the day, Thursday, July 1. We will discuss the results at an Open Forum on Thursday, July 15, in the Gathering Room.

For questions, contact Anne White or Ellen Ottstadt.

Art Questionnaire - THANKS!

Abundant thanks from the Art Committee to everyone who returned a completed questionnaire!

Forty-five of you were kind enough to participate. We appreciate the thought and care that went into your responses. We are analyzing the results; your answers and comments will guide us as we emerge from a fallow season. Here’s hoping that some who have hesitated will try something new in the Art Room in the coming weeks and months.

New Trip Announced

Jasper Cropsey.jpg

On Wednesday, July 28, a group will visit the Jasper Cropsey (1823-1900) Home and Gallery in Hastings-on-Hudson. A Hudson River School artist, Cropsey lived in Ever Rest, a charming carpenter Gothic-style home from the 1830s.

Along with his paintings on the wall, he designed some of the furniture and, as an architect, a large working studio, built to let in as much natural light as possible but also to serve as a family room and for entertaining guests.

The nearby Gallery of Art opened in 1994 and is home to a large number of Cropsey paintings hung in the “salon-style” typical of the 19th century. Another section of paintings is hung at eye level.

Other Trips on the Wait List are:

Wednesday, June 30 - Neuberger Museum of Art, SUNY Purchase: Famed for its modern, contemporary and African permanent collections.

Wednesday, July 7 - Wave Hill, The Bronx: renowned for its vista of the Hudson River and Palisades, trees, shrubs, lawn, and woodlands.

Wednesday, July 21 - Stonecrop Gardens, Cold Spring: known for its diversity of plants and flowers.

Signing Up for Trips

After 16 months of no trips during the pandemic, trips usually fill in less than a week. The van’s capacity is 12 persons.

Putting sign-up sheets in the Trips Book coincides, usually but not always, with the announcement of NEW TRIPS IN SPOTLIGHT ON FRIDAYS. Since generally some people cancel, it’s worthwhile signing up for the waitlist as long as you keep the day open.

Questions? Contact Jan Myers.
