Advocacy Committee (and Government Relations), 2016

The purpose of the Advocacy Committee is to bring the voice of Kendal residents to Federal, State, County and local government on issues which could impact the programmatic and/or financial health of Kendal on Hudson and to promote dialogue with elected officials on the strengths and virtues of Continuing Care Communities for enhancing our quality of life as we age.  Toward these ends, efforts are made to maintain close and ongoing communication with such officials.  There have been and will continue to be times when Leading Age, the parent body for CCRCs will ask us to alert and inform residents on issues important to that body and so to us.

Activities of the Past Year

These included State Senator Murphy's meeting with Kendal residents in December 2015.  The purposes of the event were: introducing him to the newly reconfigured Kendal on Hudson, having him meet Harriet Barnett, a Kendal resident who was nominated for a position on New York State's CCRC Council ("two of whose public members shall be residents" of a New York State CCRC"), and having him address several hundred KoH residents. Indeed, the overflow February meeting with Senator Murphy, which began with Jim Wood’s outreach to the Senator, proved to be informative for our residents and enthusiastically acknowledged by the Senator.

The Advocacy Committee also sponsored, with the Education Committee, a meeting on March 7, 2016, where the three candidates for the open spots on the Sleepy Hollow Village Board (Rachelle Geber, Sam Gonzalez and Sandra Spiro) were introduced by Sleepy Hollow Mayor, Ken Wray.  They each spoke about what they considered the major issues facing the Village to be and to answer residents’ questions.  Edith Litt, Education Committee Co-Chair, conducted the meeting.
