Co-Pilot Program

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you needed to go to the Phelps Hospital Emergency Room and a partner, family member, or friend was not immediately available?  Kendal resident volunteers are available to accompany you from Kendal to the hospital through the Co-Pilot Program.

The role of the Co-Pilot is to:

1.           Provide comfort to the person going to Phelps.

2.           Accompany the ambulance or go to Phelps to be on hand with the resident.

3.           Stay with the resident in the waiting room, emergency room and/or at the bedside until the urgent situation calms down or family arrives.

4.           Make phone calls, cancel appointments, fetch requested items from the resident’s apartment.

The Co-Pilots have developed a master schedule of round-the-clock coverage. The scheduled Co-Pilot carries a designated cell phone during their assigned shift.

The Co-Pilot Program has been operating very successfully for about eleven years. The program has a master schedule for round-the-clock coverage. Volunteers are "on call" no more often than once or twice a month.

When an emergency visit to Phelps is required, the resident will be asked if they want a Co-Pilot to accompany them, and the Co-Pilot on duty will be called.

If you have questions, or want to volunteer, please call the Coordinator, Norman Sissman.
