A Canine Perspective.

Kendal has had many residents who have excelled in many ways throughout their lives. Now, they have been joined by one of our in-house canine neighbors.

On June 23 Dunbar’s Ace (better known as just Ace to all of us here at Kendal) was tested at the American Legion Hall in Pomona, N.Y., for renewal of his Therapy Dog license by Intermountain Therapy Animals. The renewal carries with it $2 million worth of accident insurance while on duty, which Kendal on Hudson requires for animal visitors (other than family pets) to Sunnyside or Clearwater.

His proud handler Doris Appleby announced that Ace passed his exam with flying colors so he can visit Clearwater and Sunnyside for another two years.

Doris is advocating provision of a dog park at Kendal. She has obtained and stored in Clermont’s garage 100 donated floor mats that could be used to train dogs. Most veterinary schools recommend mastery of six behaviors in response to the commands “Sit, Down, Come, Stay, Heel, and Leave It,” in order for them to be able to run off-leash in a dog park.

Doris seeks land for a dog park and an indoor space to train Kendal residents’ canine pets. She knows a professional willing to help. Her experience and research indicate you can hardly expect a dog not to bark at inopportune times unless s/he can work off energy running for about an hour a day.
