Residents are invited to the Gathering Room at 2:00 pm on Wed., Nov. 14 for a recital by local soprano Sandra Summer-Parks.
The hour-long program called “On Wings of Song,” will include works by Felix Mendelssohn, Maurice Ravel, and Aaron Copland. Ms. Summer-Parks will again be accompanied on the piano by Christopher Oldfather.
Did you know Kendal has a chess club?
Well, we do! It came into being about four years ago and meets every Wednesday from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the apartment of Don and Doris Eder.
Even if you’re a novice or haven’t played chess for years and feel rusty, you are welcome.
We have several chess sets on hand. Feel free to join us if you’d like to try your hand and brain at this fascinating game!

Sleepy Hollow's 33rd Election District had its biggest turnout ever last Tuesday. Over 400 voters braved the rain to cast votes in the district that represents Kendal and Sleepy Hollow Manor. (That number doesn’t include many absentee ballots.)
As a result, we have a new State Senator Peter Harckham, and Francesca Hagadus was elected Councilwoman on the Mt. Pleasant Town Board.
Special thanks go to Rich and Eamon, our intrepid van drivers, who with José scheduled eight trips to the polls and back. Hats off also to Lorraine, Kendal's own Wonder Woman who, in addition to her many other duties, handled a slew of telephone inquiries from residents regarding rides. Thanks too, to many residents who generously volunteered to transport voters to and from Philipsburg Manor.
Martin Smolin and Annette Leyden did a yeoman’s task in organizing the operation.
Great job everybody. Get ready for 2020!
The Kendal Chorus requests that you save the date: DEC. 18, 2018, 7:30 PM IN THE GATHERING ROOM for its next concert.
The concert will feature the Kendal Chorus singing “Songs for an Exhibition” that pair famous paintings with beautiful music. Catherine Nesbitt will conduct and our new accompanist Mark Mitchell will be at the piano.
It should be a beautiful concert so make sure Dec. 18 is on your calendar.
The Trips Committee has another New York City Do Your Own Thing excursion, with drop off at the Metropolitan Museum, scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 12.
Priority is given to residents who have never or not recently taken this trip; no one-way trips. Some current Met exhibitions include “Delacroix,” “Dutch Masterpieces at the Met,” and “Art of Native America.”
You will be able to see the Met exhibitions or wander the fascinating sites of the great Gotham City. Whatever you choose, the Kendal van will take you back to Sleepy Hollow in time for another fabulous Bistro dinner. What could be better?
The Committee also wants you to know that there is a short wait list/space available for the Wed., Nov. 28 trip to the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers.

The exhibit includes Hudson Valley scenes by Hudson River Rug Hookers, a group led by Marilyn Bottjer. The exhibit will remain until the end of November.
The place to return Bistro silverware, dishes, and reusable green containers is now in the room near the Bistro with the ATM machine. Deb Wood, Kendal’s Recycling Chair noted, “I still hear reports that the green containers are getting into the trash – not helpful! These are reusable.
“They are run through our dishwashing process, and then are available for the next person. Help keep us on track with recycling by requesting the green containers when you take food to your apartment from the Bistro. Not all residents find them easy to open, so those folks will continue to use the clear plastic containers. Those are recyclable. Rinse them, and put them into the bin in your trash room for CO-MINGLED recycling.
“The Recycling Committee has been busy checking the signage in all the trash rooms. We have completed the research and completed the refurbishing. If you find a problem with the signs or hook for plastic bags in your trash room, please let me know.
“Thanks for keeping recyclable materials out of our general trash stream. This not only contributes to ‘greening’ our environment, but also reduces the amount that Kendal needs to pay for having our trash hauled away.”

Rev. Ronald Lemmert who was Sing Sing's Catholic Chaplain for 16 years, is rescheduled to give a lecture at Kendal on Monday, November 5 at 7:30 pm.
Now retired, Fr. Lemmert currently serves Kendal's Catholic community, offering Mass weekly in Clearwater.
Fr. Ron will discuss his new book Refuge in Hell which describes how a caring community can emerge even within a prison as the practice of faith leads to deeper lessons in forgiveness, reconciliation, and liberation.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the lecture.
Everyone seems eager to vote. If you are a volunteer driver, please print your name and phone extension on the sheet at the front desk. Then put the approximate time to meet in front of the building to drive to the polls. Then please number the spaces below with the number of riders you can accommodate.
Riders: select the best time for you to go to the polls and pick a volunteer ride or a van ride. Then enter your name and phone extension. Meet in front of the building.
Note: If you are denied a vote for any reason at the polls, ask for a provisional ballot.

Kendal on Hudson is fortunate to be working with three vibrant Pace University interns from the Health Policy and Advocacy program through the Spring of 2019.
Catherine Kennedy, Denise Parra and John Arias are all Seniors who are on track to an accelerated nursing program.
Their undergraduate program aligns well with Kendal on Hudson’s emphasis on wellness and advocacy for optimal healthy living. To fulfill their 120-hour internship requirements, they are interviewing residents throughout Kendal to learn what it means to reside in the KOH community and how each resident choses to engage in meaningful activity and wellness practices. They are utilizing tools of the Vitalize 360 program to guide their interviews.
