Liberal Troglodyte : A Poem

Liyn Clague.png

Well-known and many times published Llyn Clague, a Kendal resident, read the poem “Liberal Troglodyte” from his latest book at the gala Kendal New Year’s Eve celebration. He received many requests for copies, so we are happy to print it here.

 Liberal Troglodyte

I live in a cave.  I have hair on the backs of my hands. My eyebrows are bushy, my body  stocky, and I’m a touch mulish. I am a liberal troglodyte.

I hark to the cry of JFK, Ich bin ein Berliner! and its spirit, if not the letter – “I am a jelly donut.”  Across the Wall, I am one with you.

I look back to FDR, we have nothing to fear but fear itself, and the spirit of a new fairness, if not the letter, of give  the little guy a better deal.

I reach further back, to JC, not as a savior for my person, but to the spirit, if not the letter, of blessed are the poor and loaves and fishes for the crowd.

I am a liberal troglodyte. Beady-eyed, jut-jawed, and proud, I am out of sync with the letter, and even more the spirit, of Don’t tax, don’t tread on, Me.

I walk with Walt Whitman, radical democrat, and hear again his barbaric yawp –              By God!  I will accept nothing which all cannot have their counterpart of on the same terms – the spirit, and the letter, of  we are, en masse, as one.

Announcements

Please note this!

You are requested to wear your name tags January 1 - 7. Our new residents welcome a “Hello”, and the “old guard” appreciates a gentle reminder of their fellow residents’ names. It also helps you to remember your own name if that is a problem!

Also during the first seven days of the month, the Give-and-Take Table welcomes anything you no longer need: dishes, kitchenware, pans, vases, decorative objects, electronics in working order, and books are welcome, but please no shoes, clothing, or sharp objects. The table is on the T level of Mary Powell opposite the elevators.

Meet and Greet new residents on Friday, January 3. There were no move-ins in December, but this is the chance for you to get acquainted with prior new residents whom you may not have met. In addition, it’s a great opportunity to meet and greet each other in the new decade.

January Concerts in the Gathering Room

Music4.png

The Music Committee announced two outstanding concerts to kick off Kendal’s 2020 concert series.

On January 12 we will have “Steel Passion” the steel drum band of Christ Episcopal Church in Tarrytown. This group returns for its 5th Kendal performance.  Lively, infectious music ranging from calypso, to pop, to classical, to liturgical will make for the variety of music that Kendal residents have come to love over the years.

On January 26 we will welcome the Katherine Nesbit Ensemble, presenting a program “Immortal Beloved -- Songs and Letters of the Great Composers” (Schumann, Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Vaughan- Williams, Bernstein, Barber, and Copeland).

Both concerts are on Sunday at 3:00 pm in the Gathering Room.

The Great Kendal New Year's Eve Celebration

New Year's Eve Celebration.jpg

It’s that time of year for Kendal to show itself off.

Kendal residents are getting out their best clothes and jewelry (in some cases, tuxedos that still fit the men) for our gala New Year’s Eve celebration on Tuesday evening, December 31.

The show will commence at 8 pm in the Gathering Room, followed by a champagne- and-caviar party in the Residents Lounge.
Afterwards there will be a Sing-along in the Private Dining Room.

Muriel Fox, producer of the event, says the cast has been rehearsing for weeks, and the show will again be opened by the Kendal Singers directed by Bob Singleton. Jo-Ann Rapaport will be stage manager, Harry Phillips associate producer and Muriel, the emcee.

Performers include Bill Rakower, Leonore Meyer, Norman Sissman, Harry Phillips, Jane Hart, Roberta Poupon, David Sampliner, Peter Limburg, and Frank Neuwirth. Once again we will count down with a gleaming globe, Times Square style, at Kendal midnight which is 9 pm.  Eugene DuBow will lower the ball.

A reception follows the show.  Residents are requested to provide donations to help cover the cost of refreshments and glittering decorations.  Checks should be made out to KoH Residents Association and put in Sally Costa’s cubby.  Cash and checks may also be brought to the party.

At 10 pm the Sing-along of popular songs will be led by Bob Singleton, Deborah Wood, and Katherine Sinclair.

Art Brady will handle audio for the show and Sheila Darnborough will be videographer.  Dining director Fred Coppola has arranged for a special New Year’s Eve dinner this year, with waiter service for tables in all rooms from 5:30 pm to 7 pm.

The Kendal Singers are Deena LaMotta, Louise Schreiber, Gloria Cooper, Rema Sessler, Dot Bone, Deb Wood, Doris Appleby, Charlie Persell, David Sampliner, Art Lukach, Don Eder, Norman Sissman, Sofia Wentz, Jane Beers, Jody Spellun, Ed Hanin, Adele Trupin, Camille Hopkins, Jean MacIntosh, Ruth Laudor, and Hanan Watson.

Kendal knows how to welcome in a new year. This one should surpass all others and be a great experience for all residents.

Movies, etc.

film.png

When residents desire to see a movie, there are, of course, films shown in the Gathering Room on nights when there is not a lecture or a concert. However, if they wish to watch one in their apartments, they can do so by tuning into Kendal’s In-House Television Channel 1970.

At 8:00 pm there is either the movie they missed the evening before or an oldie they would love to see again. During the afternoon, Channel 1970 also carries some of the lectures and concerts from previous weeks.

What sort of things will residents see? The lineup for this coming week follows:

3:00 pm “The Underground Railroad in Westchester County,” a presentation by retired Pace Professor Dorothee Greenberg.

4:30 pm The Kennedys in Concert

Movies at 8:00 pm:

Mon: Judy Garland: The Concert (1985, 85 min). Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand.

Tue: Prizzi's Honor (1985, 130 min). Jack Nicholson, Kathleen Turner. Crime, comedy.

Wed: All About My Mother (1999, 105 min). Celia Roth. Drama. Directed by Almodovar

Thurs: Band of Outsiders (1964, 95 min). Ana Karina. Comedy, crime, drama. Directed by Godard.

Fri: Where'd You Go, Bernadette (2019, 109 min). Cate Blanchette, Kristin Wiig. Comedy, drama, mystery.

Sat: Gosford Park (2001, 138 min) Maggie Smith. Crime, drama.

Sun: Catherine the Great (2006, 120 min) PBS documentary.

I think you’ll agree. Lots to do and see here at Kendal.
