CATIE: Not Only A Pretty Name

CATIE is not just a pretty female name but, in Kendal's case, stands for  COMMUNICATION AND ACCESS TO INFORMATION EVERYWHERE. It's something new that a joint resident – management task force is looking into to improve the sharing of information throughout Kendal on Hudson.

More specifically, it is a communication, self-service, and resident engagement software that helps seniors connect with their community in various ways. This solution introduces an efficient way to keep residents informed of community happenings, while also keeping staff informed of residents' needs on a daily basis.

As noted above, CATIE is only at the "looking into" stage. It is a positive sign that  Management and the Residents Association continue to explore all sorts of things that will make our lives better and easier.

When, and if, there is more to report, we'll get it to you ASAP.

Slogans Wanted for Kendal's 16th Anniversary

Here’s a message from Muriel Fox. “BE A STAR – SLOGANS WANTED FOR KoH’s 16th ANNIVERSARY!”

Send us your slogan, beginning “I LOVE LIFE AT KENDAL BECAUSE …” Your answer should be 1 or 2 sentences and preferably no longer than 25 words. If yours is one of the 20 slogans selected, we’ll inscribe it on a large wallboard and take your picture with it.

Your photo and slogan will appear in our Sweet 16 Celebration, and will later feature in various locations on our campus.

Please email your slogan to Muriel or place it in her cubby before August 31. She looks forward to hearing from you!

Residents' Herb Garden

A message from the Garden Committee tells us, “The herb garden is on our lovely terrace. The residents’ planter has the dragonfly hovering over the herbs as well as a black sign: “Herb Garden”. 

Please enjoy the aromatic plants: Clip a variety of herbs to enhance your drinks and meals, or place in a vase. One resident discovered basil enhanced the flavor of his scrambled eggs.

Herbs available: basil, garlic and onion chives, lavender (not edible), marjoram, mint, oregano, two kinds of parsley, rosemary, sage, and two kinds of thyme.

We have two new additions donated by Len Andrew’s daughters: fennel and pineapple sage.”

Thanks to our Garden Committee are in order. They are making the Kendal experience tastier.

Transportation Advisory Committee’s Outreach

The Transportation Advisory Committee is continuing its outreach program.

Thanks to all who filled out the Transportation Questionnaire (114 responses) and/or attended the Open Forum (40+).

The Committee will continue gathering input over the next six weeks on residents’ priorities for KOH transportation services, as they plan and budget for 2022 and beyond.

July 23 – August 15: Put comments and ideas in Transportation Priorities box at the front desk. (forms in cubbies July 23)

August 15 – 30: Transportation Advisory Committee develops Draft Plan based on resident priorities.

Give & Take Table Takes a Vacation

An email has been received from our very popular Give & Take Table.

It noted, “I’m writing to tell you I’m taking a little vacation.  I will not appear on T Level the first week of August, and I’m giving you advance warning so you don’t bring your former treasures down and, finding me missing, leave them on the floor!

Please save them until I’m back on September 1.  I look forward to some vigorous swapping then.

September Course Announcement

A September course has been announced by the Education Committee.

Internationally acclaimed pianist Michael Boriskin returns for a three-session course, to be held in the Gathering Room, entitled “Musical Reckonings:  Composers in the Real World” 

The specific dates/topics are as follows:

September 14: Dmitri Shostakovich: Composing around the Sharks

September 21:  Women, Black and Other Composers Left Behind

September 28:  Musical Exile in 20th Century America

The classes will run from 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm.

Kendal Residents Council Election

As announced at the July 12 Council meeting, eight residents have thrown their hats in the ring for the Residents Council Election for 2022-2023. Their bios will be placed in residents’ cubbies early in August.

Please give them careful consideration. The election will take place in the Lounge on Wednesday/Thursday, September 22/23.

Coffee Klatch: Emergency Response System for Independent Living Residents

A Coffee Klatch will be held on Wednesday, July 21, at 10 am via Zoom, with a presentation by Lisa Wacht, Kendal’s Health Services Administrator.

It will deal with an important issue for residents in Independent Living, namely the Emergency Response System. It will include how emergencies should be reported, and how the system that Kendal uses to respond to those calls works.

There will be ample time for Q & A.

A Zoom invitation and meeting link will be sent to all. This is a very important matter. All residents should be online and participate.

Saturday Opera Programs Continue

Kendal’s Saturday Opera presentations are continuing.

Bedrich Smetana’s comedy The Bartered Bride will be screened on Saturday, July 24, at 1pm in the Gathering Room.

Expect vocal fireworks from Teresa Stratas, Nicolai Gedda, John Vickers, and Martti Talvela in this 1978 performance at the Metropolitan Opera conducted by James Levine.

Dinner for Adirondack Residents in the Bistro

Adirondack (Assisted Living) residents are now dining in the Bistro. This is an important effort to allow them to mix with Independent Living (IL) residents for the benefit of all.

Adirondack residents will be eating in the transitional area during Dinner Service.  IL residents are free to join them or to use any available tables in the transitional area.

Additionally, Adirondack residents may join IL residents in the Formal Dining Room or in other areas of the Bistro.
