Transportation News

TRANSPORTATION NEWS

As our needs grow for expanded transportation, we will be trying out various extended hours (not vehicles) to see how we can best accommodate residents' needs.

On Wednesdays, starting March 9, Shawn will be available from 5 pm until 9 pm to drop you off and pick you up at a restaurant if you would like to go out for dinner, pick you up at the train station if you would like to stay late in the City, or pick you up if you have a late doctor's appointment.

He will be here on Wednesday, March 9, 16, 23, and 30.

There will be a sign-up sheet at the front desk by the end of next week.

If you have any questions, please call Ellen or Briana.

P.S. The Kendal Limo is actually somewhat smaller than that pictured above.

Kendal's New Year's Eve - March 24th

Kendal New Year’s Eve will take place on the evening of Thursday, March 24! It is the long-awaited date for Kendal’s festive celebration.

According to Social Events chair Muriel Fox, the committee will “pull out all stops” to make the postponed event worth waiting for.

Dining Director Fred Coppola will produce a special dinner; a Big Show will take place at 8 pm in the Gathering Room; a festive Reception will follow the show, and a Singalong of old-time songs will end the evening in the Private Dining Room.

Sally Costa and Sharry Lukach, co-chairs of the Champagne and Caviar Reception, advise us to wear our finest evening attire, with black tie optional. Additional volunteers will be welcome, to help provide decorations and refreshments.

Muriel points out that March 24 falls in the week of the Spring Equinox, which is celebrated as New Year’s Day in many countries.

She says the show will open with a video reprise of our famous Men’s Water Ballet, and will include songs by the Kendal Singers led by Bob Singleton, plus humorous acts by talented residents. “We’ll count down the lowering of our Glittering Ball and shout ‘Happy New Year’ at Kendal Midnight – which is 9 pm.”

All residents will receive packets of “Kendal 2022” M&Ms, donated by the Rapaports.

Save April 10 for Kendal Marketing Video

Save the Date: Sunday, April 10, for the Premiere of the new Kendal Marketing Video.

Residents are invited to a screening at 3 pm in the Gathering Room.

Funded by KoH Administration, this 10- minute video is one of the outcomes of the Oral History Project initiated by the Residents Council last September.

Come and learn how the project originated, meet the interviewer and videographer, and enjoy seeing Kendal from a different perspective.

Residents Association Annual Appeal 2022

The Residents Association Annual Appeal is at the halfway point. Over 50% of our Independent Living residents have already contributed.

If you have not yet written a check, please take a moment to do it now and help us achieve full participation. Again this year, the suggested donation is $200 per resident; $400 per couple.  Make check payable to KoH Residents Association and drop it in the box on the front desk.

Perhaps you could use some help writing the check. Or maybe you’d like to have someone stop by to pick it up. We’d be happy to help; please call Gretchen Engler

Remember, this appeal is for the Residents Association which makes possible numerous activities and entertainments: concerts, lectures, happy hour, Spotlight, Kendal View, the Library and much more. In addition, a portion of contributions is set aside for local charities like Warner Library and Sleepy Hollow Fire Department and Ambulance Corps.

TO THOSE WHO HAVE MADE YOUR DONATION, MANY THANKS!

The Annual Appeal Committee (Suzanne Adel, Gretchen Engler, Muriel Fox, Mary Alice Walker)

Health & Wellness Event

On Wednesday, February 23, at 10 am, in the Gathering Room Joseph Sullivan, KoH Director of Rehabilitation, will give his second talk in the Discovery Series, an educational program designed to help seniors stay healthier, more active, and confident in their ability to enjoy life.

The topic will be “Don’t Remember What You Forgot? Maximizing Attention and Memory.”

Do remember to join him for an enjoyable and informative hour.

Saturday Opera

Kendal’s Saturday Opera Program continues.

On February 26, you have an opportunity to see Kurt Weill’s political-satirical opera Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (text by Bertolt Brecht) in the Metropolitan Opera’s famous production from 1979. The principal roles are sung by Teresa Stratas, Astrid Varnay, Richard Cassilly, Ragnar Ulfungand and Cornell McNeil; the conductor is James Levine.

Don’t miss it! In the Gathering Room at 1:00 pm sharp.

Where Do Our Philanthropic $$$ Go?”

On Monday evening, February 21, the Local Charities Committee will host a meeting at 7:30 pm in the Gathering Room.

Leaders of three organizations which we support will tell us about their work in the community. You will meet: Matthew Gullotta, President/Founder, Gullotta House; Francesca Spinner, President, Neighborhood House, Inc.; and Sara Mascia, Executive Director, The Historical Society, Inc. of Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown.

Gullotta House assists residents who face financial or other hardships by providing food vouchers, educational scholarships, and other needed help.  Neighborhood House on Wildey Street in Tarrytown serves as the base for numerous daytime activities geared mainly toward older community residents. The Historical Society has been the keeper of the collective memories of the villages of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown since 1889.

Please join us in the Gathering Room on February 21 to learn firsthand about the impact your generous contributions to the Council’s Annual Appeal make in our local community.

DVDs

Some residents may not know that our library has shelves of donated DVDs, arranged alphabetically, which can be borrowed on the honor system (no need to sign out). Our five latest donations are temporarily grouped together on the top shelf of the middle section.

If residents have a small number of DVDs to donate, please leave them in the donation bin. Any duplicates will be put on the Give & Take table.
