Kendal Residents Council Election

Council Election.png

While much of America is nervously awaiting the national election in 2020, the residents at Kendal on Hudson have their own election for their Council which is sending them to their medicine chests for bottles of tranquilizer medication. The excitement is already building.

Residents have recently received the bios of the 16 candidates for the Residents Council. Yes! There are 16 candidates for 6 seats that will be open on the 13 member Council.

Candidates Night will be held at 7:30 pm on Monday, September 16. Voting will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, September 18 and 19, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Residents Lounge. If residents expect to be away on those dates, they should request an absentee ballot from Ellen Ottstadt and be sure to return it by September 19.

While it is felt to be in bad taste for candidates to hire campaign managers, and efforts are being made to keep CNN, MSNBC and Fox away from daily reporting on the pre-election discussion, the excitement at KoH is building. Without question, the actions of the Resident Council have more direct impact on the lives of Kendal residents than does what goes on in Washington. In addition, candidates who do not tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth can be personally confronted and stand not to be invited to dinners in the Formal Dining Room. That is severe punishment.

Stay tuned to this website for weekly updates.

Faith Group Changes its Name

Discussion Group.png

After considerable discussion the long-standing Faith Group has changed its name to the Contemporary Issues Discussion Group (CIDG).

The Faith Group, founded to provide a forum for the discussion of religion-based issues, has broadened its scope in the last few years. Now dealing with ethics, behavior, religion in a more general sense with some politics thrown in, its renaming was instituted so that all residents could have a more accurate understanding of the sorts of issues that are discussed in the Group’s hour-long sessions.

The Contemporary Issues Discussion Group meets every Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the Private Dining Room. All residents are invited.

If there are questions, please contact Gene DuBow, the CIDG convener.

Jerry Tanklow's Hamlet Course

Hamlet.jpg

Written at the height of Shakespeare’s powers, Hamlet is arguably the greatest play in the English language. It has everything - a ghost, murder, adultery, comedy, philosophy, a duel - in short, something for everyone. It also has the most complex character in all of Shakespeare’s plays.

Once again, on Thursdays (Sept. 5, 12, 19, 26, and Oct. 3, 10) from 1:30 to 3:00 pm in the Private Dining Room, our own Jerry Tanklow will lead a new course, “Hamlet in Six Sessions”. The class will be limited to 15 participants. To enroll, sign up in the notebook on the Activities Alcove shelf.

Participants will need a copy of the play. Recommended: the Folger edition, available for about $6 (through Amazon or your local bookstore); it has notes on the opposite page of the text.

Jerry’s prior course filled up quickly so we advise sign-up ASAP.

Poetry in the Age of Trump

Clague.png

On Monday August 5 at 7:30 pm in the Gathering Room, resident Llyn Clague will speak about how he writes poetry and how his inspirations arise, reading from his own work. His talk will be on “Poetry in the Age of Trump”.

He will examine painting and poetry and, finally, political and social poetry in our highly tribalized world today.

Llyn and wife Alice moved to Kendal in April 2019. A writer all his life, Llyn has concentrated in the last 20 years on poetry, publishing eight books and some 300 poems in literary journals. His poems have appeared in Main Street Rag, New York Quarterly, Ibbetson Street, Wisconsin Review, and other magazines.

This presentation will, of course, be fascinating and bring us up to date on an important art form in today’s world. It will also give residents an opportunity to hear from one of our own and get to know him and what makes him tick, poetically that is.

Put it on your calendar.

The Grand Central Eagle of Philipse Manor

Grand Central Eagle.png

Kendal residents may not be aware that one of 11 eagles that graced the clock towers following the 1898 Grand Central Station renovation landed at the Philipse Manor Train Station in 1911. The eagle’s impressive 14-foot wingspan continues to grace the train station and enhance commuters’ rides today. But the eagle is in dire need of restoration if it is going to survive for future generations.

A conservation assessment has determined that there is extensive corrosion, including potential structural damage. A committee of local residents has come together to address the issues and save the eagle.

On Monday evening, July 29, at 7:30 pm in the Gathering Room residents are invited to learn about this project so close to our own back yard.

Presenting will be Ray Endreny, Dawn Kriss and Eliot Martone.

The Kendal entertainment programs are many and varied. This will be different!

Residents are in for a treat on Sunday afternoon, August 18 at 3:00 pm, as the New York-based group, O Sole Trio entertains us with their "Hooray for Hollywood" program.

Formed in 2012, the ensemble features the lush voices of soprano Erin Shields and tenor Brian Giebler, and the versatile and virtuosic David Shenton on piano and violin.

O Sole Trio's shows are both touching and humorous. Be prepared to enjoy some of our favorite Hollywood songs including a Judy Garland medley, Fred Astaire medley, “You'll Never Walk Alone” and many more.

Put this on the Must Not Miss list.
