The Welcome Team and Kendal Publications Need Writers

Writers for the Welcome Team needed.

Do you like to write? If so, help is needed to write short biographies of Kendal’s new residents. The work is easy, fun, and episodic. If you’d like to try, please contact Janet Schloat.

In addition, if you are interested in writing short pieces (fiction, non-fiction or poetry) you are welcome to submit whatever you wish to Gene DuBow for the Residents Website Writings Page.

You should also be thinking about Kendal’s literary magazine, Kendal View. If you are, you should be talking to Editor, Pat Taylor.

Staff Appreciation Fund

Staff Appreciation Fund.png

All residents have received an invitation from the Residents Association to give thanks to our staff, who help make our lives easier and more enjoyable. You can do this by contributing to Kendal’s semiannual Staff Appreciation Fund.

Given the fact that there is no tipping at Kendal, your donation of $200 per person will go to gifts for staff members. The gifts are based on the number of hours they worked during the past six months. Gifts in greater amounts are most welcome and gratefully accepted.

Please make your check payable to KoH Residents Association, put Staff Appreciation Fund on the memo line, and place it into the special box at the front desk.

Jacqueline Cummings and Eugene DuBow are the 2019 Fall Staff Appreciation Fund Committee Co-Chairs.

Advance Directives and Palliative Care

Advanced Directives.jpg

Many residents had questions and concerns after the recent presentation on “Advance Directives and Palliative Care”.

To provide additional information on other advance directives and assist in filling out the Health Care Proxy (HCP) form, Eileen Egan, RN, Esq., and Mary Kovoor from Phelps Hospital will be in the Gathering Room on November 8, 2 pm to 4 pm for a walk-in session.

HCP forms will be provided if needed. Forms are also available in the Resident Care Center (RCC), if you wish to get one before the session.

For questions before Nov. 8, please contact Julie Moran in the RCC.

Election Day - November 5, 2019

Election Day 2019.png

Local elections will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at our usual polling place Phillipsburg Manor. Three or four van trips will be made during the day, so check at the front desk to see what times our intrepid drivers, Richard and Eamon, will be chauffeuring. A sign-up sheet will be at the desk.

If you are planning to drive your own car, please ask friends and neighbors who don’t drive, if you can offer a lift. These elections are important because they determine what gets funded and by how much at the local level (see the road in and out of Kendal).

We reside in the Town of Mt. Pleasant. This election includes races for Town of Mt. Pleasant Supervisor, two members of the Town Council, Town Clerk, Town Justice and Superintendent of Highways. We also vote for a County Legislator, and judges of the (New York State)Supreme Court, County Court, and County Family Court.

Don’t forget to turn over your ballot to vote on a proposition to change the election of Superintendent of Highways to an appointed position in the future.

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan organization, has provided vote guides which can be found by the mailboxes or the front desk and which will help you make an educated choice.

Lecture: Strained Bedfellows: Why History and Politics Just Can’t Get Along

James Goodman.png

On Monday evening at 7:30 pm in the Gathering Room, James Goodman Ph. D. will present a lecture, “Strained Bedfellows: Why History and Politics Just Can’t Get Along”.

In his lecture Prof. Goodman, son-in-law of Bill McFeely, will discuss the complicated relationship between history and politics, using examples from several controversies and debates that have been in the news in the past few years, including immigration, gun control, sexual harassment, confederate monuments and race relations more generally.

History and politics are not the same thing, and there are good reasons to think about the differences between them as well as the overlaps and connections.

A professor of history at Rutgers University, Jim Goodman is the author of three books: Stories of Scottsboro (Pulitzer Prize finalist, 1995); Blackout, and But Where Is the Lamb? Imagining the Story of Abraham and Isaac. He also serves as the U.S. editor of the quarterly journal Rethinking History.

Special Screening: Hawaii

Hawaii.jpg

On Tuesday, November 12 Kendal has been chosen to view a special screening of a Pace Student documentary: Hawaii: Living on the Edge in Paradise? It will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Gathering Room.

The documentary was filmed and produced by Pace University’s award-winning Media, Communications, and Visual Arts travel documentary production course led by Maria Luskay, Ed.D.

Previous documentaries presented by Pace students at Kendal include Puerto Rico: Hope in the Dark; Cuba’s Crossroads-Hope, Rock and [R]Evolution; and Curacao’s Coral Challenge: Reviving the Rain Forests of the Sea.

This is a rare opportunity to see what is being produced by the students at our neighbor Pace University.

WRITINGS

LaMotta Pix.jpg

The Website Committee is pleased to announce the first publication on its new “Writings” blog.

Deena LaMotta sent an original poem and a picture which she said inspired her. Here it is.

MOTHER AND SON

THE SILENCE SHROUDING THEIR ACTION MASKS THE SPIRIT OF THE DAY

THE CRYSTALLINE WALL BEFORE THEM A PRESENTIMENT OF THE UNKNOWN

AN UNDIMMED TRANSPARENCY REVEALING IMPENDING PARTING

NIGHT SHADOWS OF THEIR PAST LOOM NEAR TO MARRY THE RAYS OF THE SETTING SUN

SIDE BY SIDE…IMMERSED ALONE IN REFLECTION GIRDED BY THE STRENGTH OF STEEL IN THEIR BOND

LOVE AND FAITH CLAIM THEIR SPACE WITH THE TRUTH OF A PENDING LOSS

ERSTWHILE TIMELESSNESS EMERGES AS A CHERISHED NOW… AND THEN

Trips - Available Space

Trips.jpg

There is space available on two trips sponsored by Kendal’s Trips Committee. They are:

Thurs. Nov. 14, John Jay Homestead, Katonah: Westchester’s only “Founding Father,” John Jay (1745-1829) retired in 1801 to a quiet life as a gentleman farmer on a 750-acre farm in the rural town of Bedford. Period rooms in the 1787 farmhouse have been restored to their appearance in the 1820s and furnished with decorative art and furniture owned by Jay and his family.

Wed. Nov. 20, William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation, Mt. Kisco: Free tour of a fascinating modern and contemporary collection of 3,000 paintings and sculpture by 225+ artists acquired by William Louis-Dreyfus (1932-2016), a billionaire businessman, lawyer, art collector, and poet. Most works are by self-taught (outsider art) and emerging artists unfamiliar to Kendal residents like James Castle and Bill Taylor.

Residents who have not taken this tour before will have priority, but there may be space for repeat visitors.

Sign-up for these two interesting trips is, as usual, in the Trips Book located in the Activities Alcove.

Sign-up books will be in the Front Lobby after that. Sign-up will finish on Monday, November 4 at 4 pm. There will be more information shortly in the October 31 Town Hall, Spotlight, Kendalabra, and on the Residents website.

CEO Search and Board Development Update

Update.png

Howard Smith, Chairperson of the Kendal on Hudson Board, and Mackie MacLean, of Diversified Search Firm, will be providing an update on two important topic areas. Howard will speak about Board Development, while Mackie will talk about the CEO search. The board/staff/resident workshop held October 10 with Jane Mack is one example of a Board Development effort.

This session will take place on Thursday, October 31 at 11 am in the Gathering Room. All residents are encouraged to attend.
