New Plastic Bag Law

Plastic Bag Law.png

The Plastic Bag Law is Almost Upon Us. The new Plastic Bag Law goes into effect in New York State on March 1, 2020. Supermarket chains will no longer provide plastic carryout bags but sell paper bags for five or ten cents each.  A variety of reusable tote bags are also sold at a minimal cost.  Small neighborhood stores may continue to dispense plastic carryout bags but charge a fee for each bag. The plastic supermarket carryout bags served us well in disposing of our personal household trash/waste. Members of the Recycling Committee plan to meet with Dining Services Director Fred Coppola, Facilities Management Director Bob Michael and EVS Manager Deaz Banks on Feb. 13 to formulate a recommendation to the Residents Council.

In the meantime, Independent Living residents who are exhausting their supply of plastic carryout bags are requested to purchase plastic bags that can be tied at the top, which can be found in grocery and other stores. Residents are advised to hold on to plastic carryout bags and not to take them to the trash rooms for recycling.

Please note that all personal trash/waste must be bagged, and bags tied at the top and placed in the large black dumpsters labeled All Else in the trash rooms.  Do not throw loose, unbagged trash/waste into the dumpsters under any circumstances. Residents will be notified as soon as more information becomes available.

Questions? Please contact Ursula Hahn, Chair of the Recycling Committee.

New Trip Scheduled

Bruce Museum.png1.png

The ever-hard-working Trips Committee has announced a new trip for Wednesday, March 18 to the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT.

There will be a docent tour of “On the Edge of the World,” masterworks by L.A. Ring (1854-1933) from the National Gallery of Denmark, the first exhibition solely devoted to this important Danish artist shown outside the Nordic region. Ring was both a Realist and Symbolist painter when his country was undergoing major changes and moving towards a modern industrialized society.

During free time two other exhibitions can be explored: “Under the Skin,” recent technological advances in images that allow scientists to visualize evolution that lies below the surface; and “Collecting Reimagined: A 2D Curiosity Cabinet;” two-dimensional cabinets on paper filled with printed images, photographs, textiles, and scrimshaw.

The Committee also wants you to know that there are short wait lists for two other trips:

Wednesday, March 4, Neuberger Museum of Art, SUNY Purchase. Current exhibitions include the Alexander Calder (1898-1976) Collection of sculpture, paintings and prints; “Isaac Julien: Western Union: Small Boats,” a video installation of Libyan “clandestines” journeying across the sea to escape war and famine; “Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975): Subversive Prophet,” a two-part show about the Italian prolific poet, writer, and film director’s creative output and reception in the Americas; recent acquisitions; and the permanent collection of modern, contemporary and African art.

Wed, March 11, The Frick Collection, New York. See “Henry Arnhold’s Meissen Palace” in the Portico Gallery, an exhibition of works made in the famed Meissen porcelain factory in Saxony, now a German state, from the late collector.  Many pieces formerly belonged to Augustus II, Elector of Saxony and foremost patron of Meissen.  One of the few Gilded Age mansions still in Manhattan, its permanent collection has many Old Master paintings, European sculpture and decorative art.

Sign-up for all trips is in the Trips Book located in the Activities Alcove.

May Walker.png

Save the Date: Sunday, March 29 for the play Independence: The True Story of Dr. Mary Walker.

Born in Oswego, NY, Dr. Mary E. Walker became one of the few women physicians in the country. A Civil War surgeon, dress reform crusader, women's rights activist, suffragist, feminist, abolitionist and prisoner of war, Dr. Walker is the only female recipient of the Medal of Honor, presented to her in 1866.

Residents are invited to a production of Independence: The True Story of Dr. Mary Walker at 3 pm Sunday, March 29, in the Gathering Room.

Actress Kathie Barnes will play the role of Dr. Walker in this 70-minute play, to be followed by Q & A with the audience and then a reception in the Private Dining Room.

The play will be dedicated to the memory of our own Civil War historian Bill McFeely.

A new trip is planned for Wednesday, March 11, to the Frick Collection, New York.

Many pieces formerly belonged to Augustus II, Elector of Saxony and foremost patron of Meissen.

Kendal's Annual Appeal Drive

Charities.png

Every year Kendal has an Annual Appeal Drive. Part of the funding is donated to local charities. So, a good question is: Where Do Our Philanthropic $$$ Go?

On Monday, February 10, the Council's Local Charities Committee hosts a special meeting at 7:30 pm in the Gathering Room. Leaders of three local organizations will tell us about the work they do to fill the needs and provide enrichment opportunities for local citizens.

Appearing will be: Maribel Palacios and Rocio Castenada of AFHT (Asociacion de Familias Hispanas de los Tarrytowns), Rachelle Gebler of the Community Food Pantry, and Maureen Petry of Warner Library.

All residents are invited to come and hear first-hand accounts of the important impact residents' generous contributions to the Residents Council Annual Appeal are making in our local community.

A MESSAGE FOR ALL RESIDENTS

The KoH Residents Association Annual Appeal needs the help of ALL residents to keep us active for one more year. Your recommended contribution, $200 per person or $400 per couple, is tax-deductible. This one’s for us. Unlike most CCRCs, Kendal on Hudson has no Activities Director. Instead, all the activities we enjoy here happen through the Residents Association – our weekly Spotlight, nightly movies, weekly lectures and frequent courses by outstanding experts, concerts by fine musicians, art lessons and year-round art exhibits, our lively Residents Website, Kendal View magazine and KOH-TV, wine and cheese socials, special celebrations, a wide variety of clubs, an amazing 24/7 Library, the Chorale and Bell Ringers, ping pong, a Residents Council responding to our concerns. In other words, your annual gift pays for the fulfillment of our emotional and intellectual needs here at Kendal. A portion of your donation goes to local organizations, including the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, Warner Library, Rockwood Hall, and other groups serving children and families in our community. If you’ve already contributed, your fellow and sister residents thank you. If you haven’t pitched in yet, please place your check, payable to KoH Residents Association, in the box at the front desk by mid February . Please write “Annual Appeal” on the memo line. Thank you!
