Important Notes for KoH Residents

Passover 2020

A note from Bob Sanders, who has organized Passover Seders here at Kendal over the years, says, “Under normal circumstances I would have placed a sign-up sheet for our annual Seder by now, but obviously these are not normal circumstances, and we must consider this year’s Seder canceled. Next year, not in Jerusalem, but at Kendal!”

Love Art?

There’s a lot of it in our own Kendal galleries on every floor of our buildings. Lift your spirits by strolling along a different corridor each day to admire the beautiful and varied artwork on display. And besides, the walking is good for you.

Income Tax

Please note that the deadline for filing your 2019 income taxes (both Federal and New York State) has been extended from April 15 to July 15, 2020.

Making Sense of the Census

census 2.jpg

In the last ten days, you should have received two or more letters from the US Census Bureau inviting you to provide data about your household for the 2020 census.

You can respond online at my2020census.gov. or by telephone at 844-330-2020.

To respond, you will need the Census ID number provided in the letter (in a box in the middle of the notice you received). A note of clarification: If you receive two census invitations, each with a different 12 digit census ID, pick the invitation where the address most closely matches your correct mailing address. Use that 12 digit ID and discard the other invitation (reply only one time). Don’t worry if you already answered on the other address or replied twice; the census can sort this out later.

If you call (English 844-330-2020; Spanish 844-468-2020; TDD 844-467-2020) or go online (www.my2020census.gov), you can also enter your address directly. The census will allow you to file without requiring you to enter the 12 digit census ID (your census ID will be linked by the computer system in the background).

If you have questions, feel free to call Annette Leyden or Alice Clague.

Right Now We’re Asked Not to Visit the Kendal Library until Further Notice

Closed Open.png

We are now asked not to visit the Kendal library until further notice.

The Warner Library in Tarrytown is completely closed so we can no longer borrow or return books there until further notice.

The closure coincides with that of the school system and is expected to last at least until the end of April. The book drop outside Warner is locked, and we are asked to hold on to any borrowed books or DVDs until Warner Library reopens.

Mini Discussion Groups

One of Kendal’s most well-attended activities are the Thursday morning Contemporary Issues Discussion Group meetings. Residents cram themselves into the Private Dining Room to kick around such topics as “Denial”, “Is Democracy Dying?”, and “American Nationalism”.

The imposition of the coronavirus rules about togetherness brought the program to a halt. The intelligence and articulateness of the Kendal discussants moved Issues Convener Gene DuBow to think about trying to break the group into smaller units and have a Mini Discussion Group program whereby groups of five could meet together. That has subsequently had to be cancelled. Gene is working on trying to conduct the program using Zoom.

Several days prior to the meetings, each participant will be given some appropriate reading material. The next topic will be “Isolation”.

The program is open to all residents who which to join in. However, a contact with Gene is necessary.

Dinner Deliveries and Recycling

Dinner Delivery 2.png

In keeping with good common sense and the rules against people congregating these days, Dinner plus a lunch sandwich is being delivered to every Kendal resident in independent living apartments.

Residents fill out a weekly menu and with great efficiency, late in the afternoon, a two-handled bag appears outside their door with each ordered item enclosed in a plastic container. The quality of the cuisine, always a great plus at Kendal, remains constant at a Five-Star level.

You may ask, “What do people do with the bags and plastic containers?” The Recycling Committee, never one to let a recycling possibility go by without comment, suggested:

During this time of increased use of plastic containers, we implore you to clean them properly, leave them open and nest them to reduce bulk, or reuse them if possible. The two container halves can be cut apart easily with kitchen scissors for an even tighter nest.

Use the paper bag in which your meal was delivered to store clean recyclables temporarily in your kitchen if the recycling bin in your trash room is full.
