Saturday Opera Change

There will be a change in Kendal’s January 22 Saturday Opera Program.

The length of Der Rosenkavalier requires screening in two sessions. Therefore, the screening is postponed to a later weekend when the Gathering Room is also available on a Sunday.

Instead, Verdi’s Rigoletto will be shown in the Gathering Room at 1 pm. The principal roles are sung by Cornell MacNeil, Placido Domingo and Ileana Jones in a 1977 performance at the Metropolitan Opera.

On Saturday, January 29, at 1 pm we will again offer lighter fare, a filmed production of Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron) by Johann Strauss with Siegfried Jerusalem, Wolfgang Brendel, Ivan Rebroff, Martha Mödl, Ellen Shade and Janet Perry, and the radio symphony orchestra of Stuttgart.

Masks are required.

New Drawing & Painting Classes

Kendal announced that beginning February 2, there will be new Drawing & Painting Classes held in the Art Room on Wednesdays from 3 pm-5 pm.

In response to last June’s resident survey, the Art Committee, with support from the Residents Association, is sponsoring a six-month series of classes with professional art teacher Janice Noto-Helmers.

Janice is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design/New School and has been a successful book and graphic designer for many years. She currently teaches art at The Osborn.

The classes will progress through drawing fundamentals to painting and other media, but each class will be a self-contained experience.

Sessions are stand-alone as each will be a complete class. The first class will explore fundamentals using a variety of materials; participants will enjoy learning sketching techniques for drawing geometric shapes in still-life setups.

Sign-up is required for each weekly session to ensure that many will have the chance to participate.

To sign up for the Wednesday, February 2 class, contact Gretchen Engler.

Keep Them Coming: Eyeglasses that is.

Keep Them Coming!

The Kendal on Hudson community has donated more 2,009 pairs of glasses, cases, and hearing aids to New Eyes for the Needy.

Because this agency discontinued the program, they will now be sent to the  N.J. Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center.

Please continue your donations by placing them in the box in the Activities Alcove opposite the Computer Room.

With appreciation, Amelia Augustus.

Our appreciation goes out to Amelia for chairing this worthwhile activity

New Trip: The Temporary Frick

On Saturday, February 19, there will be a trip to the Frick Madison, New York City, the first trip to the old Breuer (the Frick’s temporary home) since it began renovating its mansion.

Residents may recall the Met Breuer, which was formerly the Whitney Museum of American Art. The big question is: how will Frick’s Old Masters look in Breuer’s minimalist architecture? Media reviews are positive but see for yourself.

At the Frick Madison, highlights of the collection are being shown in a new light. They are arranged chronologically and by region for the first time. Rooms are given to Bellini, Fragonard, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Vermeer and Whistler. Sections emphasize the Netherlands, Italy, France, Britain, and Spain.

The exhibition features paintings and sculptures as well as French decorative arts, porcelain, Indian Mughal carpets, Limoges enamels, and clocks owned by Henry Clay Frick.

New York City requires Covid protection at its museums: proof of vaccination, proof of identity, masks, and six feet of social distancing; the coat check is closed.

Calligraphy

On Wednesday, January 26, from 2 pm - 4 pm, the Art Committee will host a Calligraphy Workshop, headed by our own Shelley Robinson, in the Art Room. Participants will enjoy a relaxing winter afternoon of Calligraphy, the art or practice of beautiful handwriting.

The group will design a personal monogram, choose a favorite font and share a favorite saying or verse for italic practice on a greeting card or wall hanging.  No experience is necessary and all materials will be provided by the Art Committee.

Shelley has enjoyed doodling with the alphabet her whole life and has studied calligraphy in London, New York and Castle Hill in Truro, Massachusetts.  Her work is usually seen on posters, fliers or programs for good causes.

The class will be limited to six.

Health & Wellness Event

Jennifer Gardy and the Health & Wellness Committee invite all residents to hear Dr. Syna Kandarappallil, our own “Dr. K” (who serves as Kendal’s Medical Director) talk about “A Geriatrician’s Approach to Memory Loss.”

Dr. K, a leading gerontologist, will share her insights with us this Friday, January 21, at 10 am.

Watch for a ZOOM invitation with a link to join the lecture. Write down the date and time so you’ll remember to tune in.

Saturday Opera: Der Rosenkavalier

The Opera Committee invites you to join them for Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss with Kiri Te Kanawa (Marschallin), Tatjana Troyanos (Octavian), Judith Blegen (Sophie), Kurt Moll (Baron Ochs), and Luciano Pavarotti (Italian Singer). James Levine conducts the orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera in this 1982 performance.

This recorded presentation will take place on Saturday, January 22 at 1 pm in the Gathering Room. Of course, masks are required.

Kendal Concert: “Bravissimo Broadway”

On Sunday, January 23, the Empire Trio (formerly known as O Sole Trio) returns to Kendal to perform their popular show “Bravissimo Broadway” at 3 pm in the Gathering Room.

Performing will be Erin Shields, soprano; Adam Von Almen, baritenor; and David Shenton, piano and violin. The program includes favorite Broadway show tunes and a Broadway tribute to New York City.

The Empire Trio show promises to have us tapping our toes and singing in our seats (through a mask of course).

Covid Update

Dear Clearwater Residents, Family & Friends,

I am providing notice of one (1) additional COVID-positive staff member with primary duties as a caregiver in Clearwater. This individual last worked in the Clearwater  neighborhood on Tuesday, January 4. This staff member will isolate at home, returning to  work in accordance with Kendal policy and CDC/NYS return to work guidance.

We continue to be in touch with our Department of Health epidemiologist and take all precautions to mitigate the introduction and spread of COVID at Kendal. We also continue  to proactively test residents for COVID and exercise great caution in following infection control best practices: proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and emphasis on cleaning/sanitation.

The Visitation Program remains open. Please assist us in maintaining a healthful  environment for all residents and staff by continuing to wear your mask during visits (a  requirement by CMS based on current COVID transmission rates), practicing good hand  washing and maintaining social distancing as much as possible. Remember that all visitors to Kendal should be entering through the main lobby and complete a COVID screening  form prior to visiting Clearwater. If you are feeling under the weather, please delay your visit for another time and contact our Recreation Department at 914-922-1041 to request a virtual visit with your loved one(s).
