A Verbal Trip to Teatown

On July 18, Kendal will host a lecture by Howard Permut and Kevin Carter entitled “This is Teatown”.

Teatown is a nonprofit nature preserve and environmental education center in the Lower Hudson Valley, with 15 miles of hiking trails, a two-acre island refuge for over 230 species of native wildflowers, year-round programming, wildlife exhibits, and natural science day camps in the summer and school breaks.

Its goal is to instill a love of the environment, positive attitudes toward conservation and environmental protection, and a sense of personal and civic responsibility.

Residents are invited to join in on Monday evening, July 18, as Board Chair Howard Permut and Executive Director Kevin Carter educate us about how Teatown carries out its mission to inspire the broader community to lifelong environmental stewardship.

The program will be in the Gathering Room starting at 7:30 pm.

Additional Shabbat Service

A second monthly Shabbat Service will be held at Kendal as of this month.

New Trip Scheduled

On Wednesday, August 10, a Trips Committee group will visit the Horace Greeley House in Chappaqua.

It was the Greeley family’s country home from 1864 to 1873. Their principal residence was in New York City.

Mr. Greeley was the editor and publisher of the New York Tribune and a presidential candidate who lost to Ulysses S. Grant. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now the home of the New Castle Historical Society.

The house and garden have been restored in keeping with the era when it was Greeley’s home. A docent will provide a tour of the lower and upper floors (elevator available).

We will have lunch at Le Jardin (across the street from the house), followed by the house tour, and then, if time allows, stroll on the main street of Chappaqua.

Sign-up as usual is in the Trips Book at Kendal’s front desk.

Pottery Workshop

Kendal will have a Pottery Workshop on two Thursdays in July: July 14 and July 21 from 2 pm-4pm.

Join Florence Walker, a new Kendal resident, in the Art Room for this beginner's pottery class. She will describe the different types of clay and how they are fired and demonstrate how to make bowls and vases using coils, slabs, and pinching.

After Florence's demonstration, participants will do a project to illustrate one of these techniques.

In the second class, participants will paint their project using acrylic paint. Florence says: “You will find your inner spirit in making a pot or sculpture or wherever it takes.”

Florence has been doing pottery for over 50 years. She has her own studio and uses the potter’s wheel to make bowls and vases. She has many beautiful pieces of pottery in her apartment.

Class is limited to 6. Sign up with Lynn Brady,

Lecture: Revolutionary War Sites

On July 11 there will be a program (7:30 pm in the Gathering Room) featuring Constance Kehoe, who will talk about “Westchester Revolutionary War Sites”.

Since 2018, Constance Kehoe has served as president of Revolutionary Westchester 250 whose mission is to build awareness and excitement for the events, places, ideas, and people – both the unsung and the famous – of the Revolutionary War period in Westchester County.

Constance Kehoe majored in history at Vassar College and received a Master’s in Teaching from Wesleyan University. She started and ran Literacy Warehouse, an educational sales and consulting business, for 20 years and was elected Irvington Village Trustee in 2009. She served as Trustee of the village for 12 years and Deputy Mayor for 8 years. She is obviously a “yesterday and today” person. You can hear her on July 11 when she puts it all together.

Fourth of July: The Show on the Terrace

Muriel Fox, chair of our July 4 event, has planned a lively program on the Terrace beginning at 5:30 pm. It will feature songs by the Kendal Singers, readings of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, and a debate on “What Should Be the Next Amendment to the U.S. Constitution?”

Bob Kutscher will head a contingent of ushers to help us find seats under the tent.

Then, enjoy the Fireworks! Rita Benzer will lead KoH residents up the hill to Rockwood Hall at 8:30 pm on July 4 to view spectacular fireworks along the Hudson River.

Starting point will be the park entrance opposite Alida. Those who are sturdy enough to climb to the hilltop should bring a flashlight and something lightweight for seating. Others can watch from a variety of locations in our buildings. Posters listing these locations will appear on easels near the elevators.

Fireworks begin at 9pm.
