Washington Irving.jpg

Be sure to come to the Gathering Room at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 19 to meet our illustrious neighbor, creator of “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Mr. Washington Irving!

Hal Greenberg, an Irving scholar and interpreter at Sunnyside, Tarrytown, represents Washington Irving as he was in 1859. Learn about Washington Irving’s history and enjoy the telling of one of his favorite stories.

This is a great opportunity to see hear and shake hands with one of history’s great novelists.

Ice Cream Social Aug. 14

ice cream.jpg

Here’s something novel. Kendal is going to have an ice cream social.

If you didn’t know, The origin of ice-cream was an ice-cream-like food which was first eaten in China in 618-97 AD. King Tang of Shang, had 94 ice men who helped to make a dish of buffalo milk, flour and camphor. A kind of ice-cream was invented in China about 200 BC when a milk and rice mixture was frozen by packing it into snow. Today, the components are much better and probably better tasting.

It is well known that the ice cream at Kendal is one of its great treats. It comes all the way from Pennsylvania (Hershey’s Ice Cream - no relation to the chocolate people) .

This will be a rare treat where residents can meet and lick together (the ice cream that is).

It will take place on Wednesday, August 14 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm in the Private Dining Room.

Chess Club

Chess.jpg

A wise philosopher once said, “Unlike other games in which lucre is the end and aim, [chess] recommends itself to the wise by the fact that its mimic battles are fought for no prize but honor. It is eminently and emphatically the philosopher’s game.”

If you have a philosopher’s bone in your body, you will want to join up with Kendal’s Chess Club and enhance your list of things for which you can garner a dollop of honor.

Everyone is welcome to the Chess Club every Monday at 4:00 pm in Don Eder’s apartment (Doris also lives there).
If you need instruction on how to get there and what to expect, you should speak to Don, Wayne Richter, Len Andrew or Art Lukach. They’ll even help you improve your game.

A Reading of Shakespeare's Sonnets

Shakespeares sonnets.jpg

Shakespeare’s Sonnets have fascinated the world with their beauty and mystery ever since they were published in 1609.

On Sunday, September 8, the Resident Acting Company will present an afternoon of Shakespeare’s sonnets in our Gathering Room at 3:00 p The RAC consists of actors who banded together following the 2017 closure of the Pearl Theater after 33 seasons.

The cast, featuring Rachel Botchan, Dominic Cuskern, Robin Leslie Brown, and Bradford Cover, will read selected sonnets that express the thoughts of a person in a crisis. These crises are often about love, sometimes about betrayal, time, or death, but always deeply felt. These poems exist in the extremes. The kind of deep feelings we all have in private but don’t know how, and probably don’t wish, to express to one another.

A post-show discussion will be led by Kate Farrington, Shakespeare expert, who recently taught the very popular course “Shakespeare’s Comedies: Travels through Time.”

The afternoon will conclude with a reception in the Private Dining Room.

Lecture Aug. 12: Immigration at the U.S.-Mexico Border

Refugees US Border.png

On August 12, Emily Polstein (Debby O’Keefe’s grandniece and the late Bob Polstein’s granddaughter), will talk about her experiences living and working at the border. A graduate of Oberlin College, where she studied environmental justice and Latin American Studies, Emily grew up in Hastings-on-Hudson. She is completing her Master’s in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania.

From August 2017 to August 2018, our guest speaker worked for Annunciation House, a non-profit organization that operates a network of shelters for recently arrived immigrants in El Paso, Texas.
Emily also volunteered as a visitor for immigrants in ICE detention facilities. Annunciation House shelters provide basic needs and services -- beds, food, a change of clothing to very recently arrived people -- and assists in making travel plans for those trying to get to family members or friends in other parts of the U.S. For those staying longer, it helps meet other social needs, such as getting children enrolled in school, finding legal help, etc.

The lecture and discussion will take place in the Gathering Room at 7:30 pm on Monday, August 12. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear a first-hand report about the Number #1 social issue in today’s America.

New Trip

Sleepy Hollow.jpg

Jan Myers and her Trips Committee is at it again with an interesting hometown trip for those who are interested in the place where we reside.

On Wed., Sept. 18, participants will get a tour and an update of Sleepy Hollow with Mayor Ken Wray. This is a Free morning tour to give Kendal residents greater familiarity with the people and village of Sleepy Hollow; see diverse neighborhoods, downtown and the former G.M. site; learn about the village’s demographics and be updated on the progress of two very large development projects -- Edge on Hudson and the East Parcel --and their long-term effects. After a stop at Village Hall, enjoy an optional lunch at Kendal with the Mayor. Residents who have already taken this tour are excluded from participation

The Committee requests that you do not sign up for a trip unless you want to go so much that you are willing to keep the date free. If you do need to cancel for any reason, draw a line through your name on the list. The Trips Book is in the Activities Alcove across from the Computer Room.

If you make the trip, you will get the real lowdown on this community which is our true hometown.

Mac and Windows Workshops August 13

computer workshops.png

The second Mac Workshop at Kendal will take place Tuesday, August 13, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm led by Dr. Darmon in the Gathering Room. He will also answer questions about iPhones. Bring your questions and your devices if you want help with them.
