On Monday at 7:30 pm, Kendal will be sponsoring a Zoom lecture by Dr. Darren R. Hayes, “Cybersecurity and Cyberwarfare: The New Frontier in Crime and Conflict”

Dr. Hayes, Director of Cybersecurity, Pace University, will introduce us to the concept of cybersecurity and what it means for us, for our economy, and for our national security.

We will be introduced to the concept of cyberwarfare and gain insight into how each of us is being tracked, and how we can protect ourselves online and on our smartphones.

This talk assumes no prior technical expertise, only a sense of curiosity. A leading expert in the field of digital forensics and cybersecurity, Dr. Hayes conducts research with his Pace students in support of law enforcement agencies both domestically and internationally. He has been awarded grants in the field of computer forensics by the Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, and other notable foundations.

The Library Committee wishes you to know…

New Books – The latest “New to Your Library” list is now in a stand above the return bins to the right as you enter the library. Remember, you can check whether we have a book and if it is available, by visiting the Library Catalog online at librarycat.org/lib/2blackcats.

Westchester County Library System – As some of you new to Kendal may not know, residents also have access to the entire Westchester County Library System through an arrangement with the Warner Library in Tarrytown. Books, DVDs, etc. are reserved at Warner and picked up and later returned by a Kendal driver once a week. A yellow sheet with all the information can be found on the counter in the library. If you do not have a Westchester library card, ask a library volunteer to give you an application, and we will send it to Warner for you.

Horticulture News

Two Pleas From the Horticulture Committee

Hands Off, Please! It is unfortunately necessary to remind residents and staff that flowers, herbs, and vegetables grown in the planters on the Terrace belong to the individual residents who tend those planters. They are not for the public to take without permission.

The exception is the Residents’ Herb Planter-- the second one north of Clermont. It is identified by a sign and an effigy of a butterfly on a stake.

Overwatering: Persons watering the planters on the Terrace sometimes empty their hoses into nearby beds, thinking to help the plants by giving them plenty to drink. However, this well-intentioned practice can actually harm or kill the plants by drowning their roots. It’s better to use the water remaining in the hose after shutting it off to flush away debris around the planters. Also, please remember to shut the hoses off in the proper sequence: first the spigot next to the wall; then the little flip-up levers on the hose connector; then empty the hose using the trigger on the spray head and return the hose to its container as neatly coiled as you can. These expandable hoses, so light in weight and easy to handle, cost $50 apiece, and the money for replacing them ultimately comes out of our rent.

New Art Show "Anything Goes"

Anything Goes.jpg

There will be a new Kendal art show, “ANYTHING GOES,” on the Rue des Artistes from October 18, 2021, to April 19, 2022.

INITIAL SUBMISSION:

The curators ask for the submission of artwork by residents and staff, never seen before on the Rue des Artistes. Paintings, photographs, collages, assemblages, wearable art, fiber arts, and whatever can hang on the wall or fit in the case are welcome.

Resident/staff artists are asked to bring their work to the Art Room on Wednesday, September 22, between 10 a.m. and 12 noon or between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. They may submit a maximum of three (3) works, and will be advised as to which works have been chosen.

Works are to be picked up Friday, September 24 between 10 a.m. and 12 noon, or between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

If artists are unable to bring their work to the Art Room, please call a curator, and an arrangement will be made for the work to be collected.

Artists are reminded to put their name, the title of the work, the medium (oil, collage, etc.), phone number, and apartment number on the back of the work submitted. The work does not have to be framed for the INITIAL SUBMISSION.

The FINAL SUBMISSION of selected artworks is Saturday, October 16. We look forward to seeing the submitted work and showing others the many talents here at Kendal. It should be an interesting show.

Curators: Lynn Brady, Ann Holloway, and Judy Baker.

Kendal Anniversary Celebration Postponed

Postponed.jpg

Kendal is Sweet 16 this year and so an anniversary celebration was planned for September 30.

We have been recently advised that the ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION HAS BEEN POSTPONED.

The 16th Anniversary Committee wisely decided that, because of uncertainties connected with the Covid-19 pandemic, the celebration would have to be delayed.

They are hopeful that the event can be re-scheduled for October or November at the latest. They will advise us of the rescheduled date. However, our communal health regulations must be obeyed. So, we will take it in stride and hope the delay will not last too long.

October Course Announced

Athenian Drama.jpg

An October Course was recently announced by the Education Committee. The course is entitled “Athenian Drama and the Sense of Justice” with Professor Maude Meisel.

It will be held Tuesdays, October 5, 12, 19, 26 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the Gathering Room.

For Athenians, moral ambiguities grew as the Peloponnesian War dragged on, and Athenian dramatists reflect creatively on their times both as powerful public entertainers and as individual provocative voices.

In drawing on myth to explore the most fundamental questions of human life and society, they continue to provoke; current crises in the U.S. make it especially timely to return to those questions.

The plays to be discussed are: Aeschylus -The
Eumenides
;  Sophocles - Oedipus at Colonus;  Euripides - Iphigenia at Aulis;  Aristophanes - Lysistrata.

A sign-up sheet will be distributed in September.

Professor Meisel holds a Ph.D from Columbia’s Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures. She has taught Russian Language, Literature, and Culture, as well as Classics and Humanities, at Columbia, Middlebury, SUNY Stony Brook, and UC Riverside.
