Monday Evening Lecture: Coping With The Next Pandemic

Nicholas Robinson.jpg

The Education Committee is sponsoring a Monday evening (March 29) Zoom Lecture: “Coping with the Next Pandemic.” It will take place at 7:30 pm.

The presentation will be made by Nicholas Robinson, University Professor on the Environment and Distinguished Professor of Environmental Law Emeritus, Pace Law School, who will discuss “Coping with the Next Pandemic.”

In his March 2020 Scientific American article, Professor Robinson noted that the health of all life on the planet is connected. The COVID-19 outbreak starkly reminds us that human, animal, plant, and environmental health and well-being are all intrinsically connected and profoundly influenced by human activities.

Known worldwide for his work on environmental law since 1969, when he was named to the Legal Advisory Committee of the President’s Council on Environmental Quality, Nick Robinson founded Pace University’s environmental law programs, edited the proceedings of the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and is author of several books and numerous articles. He holds a BA from Brown University and a JD from Columbia University School of Law.

Residents will receive an email invitation with the Zoom link -- 7:30 pm Monday, March 29.

This is an extraordinary opportunity and should not be missed.

Covid -19 Update

Covid 19 update.jpg

The following message was received from Kendal Management.

NEW: Vaccine Details

We feel that it is important to share that none of the Independent Living (IL)COVID cases experienced at Kendal on Hudson resulted from COVID-positive staff. It is our hope that, with this information, you will have confidence that our community is in a good place with a resident population that is 97% vaccinated. Staff were provided the opportunity to receive COVID-19 vaccines at the clinics held on site beginning December 23 through early March. Staff were educated, provided opportunity to ask questions, and were asked to consent to be vaccinated. In consideration of Kendal’s Values and Practices, coupled with the vaccine’s Emergency Use Authorization status, vaccines were not mandated. Ongoing education will be provided to staff and more opportunity to become vaccinated will be presented.

RECAP: What opened in March?

March 1- IL residents may eat/drink together in apartments

March 8– Kendal open to outside visitors for Independent Living

March 17– Dining options expanded

  • BREAKFAST / LUNCH: Bistro seating open for IL residents

  • NEW: For IL Visitors...
Overnight visitors are now welcome to stay in IL apartments

  • Outdoor spaces, including the Terrace, are approved for visitors to enjoy with Kendal loved ones

Women's History Month

Muriel Fox.png

March is Women's History Month

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in commemorating and encouraging the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.

To join in the commemoration, Kendal’s Contemporary Issues Discussion Group (CIDG) will dedicate its March 25 session (Thursday 10:00 am) to the month-long event.

The primary discussant will be Kendal resident Muriel Fox.

Many here at Kendal know Muriel as a friend. However, many do not know that in 1966 she co-founded the National Organization of Women (NOW), and she was NOW president, Betty Friedan's main lieutenant, and director of operations in its earliest years. She also helped edit NOW's original Statement of Purpose (1966). In 1967 she organized NOW's New York chapter, and she founded and edited NOW's first national newsletter (1970-1971). She was the head of public relations for NOW and eventually served as NOW's vice president (1967-1970), chair of its board (1971-1973), and chair of its national advisory committee (1973-1974).

CIDG will be glad to do its little bit to further the importance of Women’s history and will be honored to have Muriel as its lead discussant on this important topic.

Those residents who have not previously attended a CIDG session should get in touch with Gene DuBow for a Zoom invitation.

Supporting Local Bookshops

Bookstore.jpg

There are times when residents cannot find a book in the Kendal Library or at the Warner Library in Tarrytown (with which Kendal has a close relationship), and a decision is made to purchase one. The first stop should be a local bookshop in our area. For instance, The Village Bookstore in Pleasantville which advertises in our own Kendal View.

However, if all that fails, Ursula Hahn suggests Residents consult the online not-for-profit bookseller Bookshop.org, which donates 10% of the cost of each book you purchase to independent local bookstores nationwide. Bookshop.org carries any and all books your heart desires, including foreign-language books.

To date, the organization has raised more than $12 million to assist independent bookstores, an endangered species. Your contribution will be added to an earnings pool which is evenly distributed periodically among local bookstores across the nation.

Ordering a book is easy: after opening the website, you type the book’s title into the search box and proceed to shipping, payment and ordering instructions as with any online purchase.

The Bookshop.org website also offers a bookstore locator and three independent bookstores which sell online are listed in zip code 10591. They are among the beneficiaries of the donation pool.

Ursula reports, “I’ve ordered two books, one in German; both were delivered within days”.

Shredding Options

Shredding4.jpg

Kendal has shredding options for its residents. It has nothing to do with cabbage!

However, for those who have lots of papers to shred, the Westchester County Mobile Shredder will be in Sleepy Hollow on Saturday, March 27 from 10 am -1pm.

The shredder will be in the parking lot across from Village Hall on Beekman Ave. They accept two big paper bags filled with papers —but be sure to remove paper clips and binders. Questions? Get in touch with Edith Litt.

For shredding at Kendal, there is a large shredder located in the copier room in the corner next to the double elevators on C-level where residents can shred their own documents (please remove paper clips and staples first).

Residents can also put papers in the large grey bin, just outside the copier room, which the shredding company picks up every other week. The bin is secure as no one at Kendal has keys.

If you have just a few sheets, there is also a small shredder on T-level near the swimming pool.

Sorry! There is no help for those who want to make coleslaw.

Library News

Library News 4.jpg

Kendal residents are voracious readers. The wonderful group that makes up the Library Committee works hard to keep them provided with suitable reading matter. They want to remind residents about Paperback Carousels.

If you saw the Carousels being weeded recently, you may be interested to know more about this amenity provided by the Library Committee. There may be more to it than you realized.

There is a Carousel, with a mix of fiction (green dot), non-fiction (yellow dot) and mystery (red dot), in every building.

Borrow and return at your convenience.

Alida - 1st floor near elevator

Clermont - 1st floor near elevator

Mary Powell - two on 2nd floor near elevator

Mary Powell - one on 3rd floor near elevator

Robert Fulton – 1st floor near bridge

Donated paperbacks are added to the Carousels throughout the year, overseen by Lynn Brady and maintained by volunteers; then once every year the Carousels are weeded to make room for new titles.

Do not despair, books are not being discarded. They are going to a better world…in fact, to Better World Books (betterworldbooks.com), a secondhand bookseller that supports literacy efforts around the world and pays us a token amount for our donations.

We are pleased to be facilitating this honorable life cycle for Kendal Carousel paperbacks.

Kendal Channel 970 Access

970.jpg

The Computer Committee has learned that some residents cannot access Channel 970, Kendal on Hudson’s internal TV channel. We would like to know who does not get the channel, and if you want the channel connected to your TV.

The TV channel broadcasts recordings of Kendal programs each afternoon; Saturday and Sunday afternoon programs; commercial movies each evening; key management and Residents Council/Association meetings when they occur; and shows still photos of the Rue des Artistes exhibits in between.

Please contact Amelia Augustus or Sheila Darnborough of the Computer and KoH TV Committees by Monday, March 29 for help with putting channel 970 on your TV.

Once we have a complete list, arrangements will be made with Verizon to make the connections.
